Teacher: Good morning, everybody! Glad to see you, dear friends! Let's start our English lesson.

The theme of our lesson is "Buildings". Open your books on page 129 exercise 1. Look on the buildings on this page .Which of them do you like best? Why?

Teacher: Now we are going to look at the most beautiful buildings of Great Britain. You saw them in your favourite films about Harry Potter. First of all I'd like you to have a look at your tasks. You will have a presentation with very short information and at the same time you will listen to a text. The text will give you some additional facts. Listen carefully in order to do your tasks correctly.

Slide 1

Hogwarts. Harry Potter sightseeing tour.

Slide 2

Thousand of Harry Porter fans come to Britain to see the places where the famous films were shot. They are surprised to learn that Hogwarts School was actually filmed in different places.

Slide 3

Alnwick Castle, Northumberland

Do you remember Harry Potter's broom flying lessons? They were shot on the grounds of Alnwick Castle. This castle is one of the largest castles in Britain and it is proudly called 'The Windsor of the North'. It was built in 1309 and is still lived in! It has been home of the earls and dukes of Northumberland for 700 years!

Slide 4

The amazing thing is that the castle is open to the public (from March to October) and you can see a lot of interesting things there. Hagrid and Dumbledore look-alikes perform magic shows there.

Slide 5

Do you remember the magnificent dining hall where Harry Potter and other Hogwarts students had meals?

Slide 6

Christ Church College, Oxford

In real life it's the Great Hall of Christ Church College, the largest college of Oxford University. Built in 1529, the Great Hall hasn't changed very much. Only the roof had to be reconstructed once-after a fire in the 18th century.

Slide 7

As Harry and the new first-years enter Hogwarts they are greeted by Professor McGonagall. This scene was shot on the 16th century staircase which leads up to the Great Hall.

Slide 8

The Bodleian Library, Oxford

Hogwarts' Library is in fact the Bodleian Library, the main library of Oxford University. It's here that Hermione gets turned to stone and Draco is turned into a ferret.

Slide 9

The Bodleian Library has one of the largest collections of books in the world - about 9 million! Many of them are written by hand!

Slide 10

Gloucester Cathedral, Gloucester

The magnificent cloisters of Gloucester Cathedral were used as the corridors of Hogwarts. It's here that the paralyzed victims are discovered and the warning letters in blood appear. The talking portraits, ghost scenes and the overflowing bathrooms were also filmed here.

Slide 11,12

Originally built as an abbey in 1089, the cathedral is famous for its splendid fan vaulting (the earliest example of this kind of ceiling in Britain) and its stained glass windows.

Slide 13

The Lavatorium (it's really called that-and it wasn't the monk's toilet but the place where they washed) is where Harry and Ron hide from a giant troll. The troll is mainly computer-generated, but huge legs were used in filming to make it look more realistic!

Slide 14

Durham Cathedral, Durham

Some of Hogwarts' corridors and classrooms were shot at Durham Cathedral. This 12th-century building is famous not only for its architecture but also for its beautiful setting. In a national poll it was voted the nation's best-loved building.

Slide 15

In the first film you can see Harry Potter walking through the snowy cloisters of Durham Cathedral with his owl, Hedwig. While the Gloucester cloisters are remarkable for their vaulted ceilings and glass stained windows, the Gothic windows in Durham's cloisters are open to the elements.

Slide 16

Lacock Abbey, Wiltshire

Another fantastic place to find traces of Harry Potter's school is Lacock Abbey. This wonderful abbey was founded in 1232 and for over 300 hundred years served as a nunnery. When King Henry VIII closed it down during the Reformation, it became a country house.

Slide 17

But most parts of the medieval abbey have remained unchanged! There is a real cauldron there used for Professor Quirrelli's Defence Against the Dark Arts classroom.

Slide 18

Glennfinnan Viaduct, Scotland

The Hogwarts Express train that carries Harry, Ron and Hermione to school each year is filmed in an actual railway line. It was built between 1897 and 1901 and consists of 21 arches, the tallest of which is 30 metres high.

Slide 19-27

Teacher: OK, now let's check your answers.
