Welcome to New York”.

  1. What is the official name of America?
  2. How many states are there in America?
  3. What is the capital of America?

The official name of America is the USA (the United States of America) or the US (the United States). The country consists of fifty states. New York City(NYC) is in the state of New York. It`s not the capital, but it is the largest city in the country. The capital of the USA is Washington, DC. (Слайды 2-4) You are in the USA now and you are going to see one of the greatest cities on the planet – New York!

- Now let`s read, write and remember some new words. (Слайды 5-7) To talk about New York we`ll need new words and expressions: names of places and main attractions of this great city, the name of the river in New York.

a borough [bᴧrǝ] – район   Manhattan [mᴂnhᴂtn] – Манхэттен

Broadway is the most famous street in New York. It is one of the longest avenues in Manhattan (25 km.), but it is famous not only for this fact. It is also famous for the small area near Times Square where Broadway crosses Seventh Avenue. The lights from all the theaters and advertisements are very bright. The hit which was born on Broadway is “Chicago”! This fantastic musical is still the biggest hit in town. Thousands of people come to Broadway to see this great show in the Ambassador theater. Times Squareis the center of the theater district. There are always a lot of tourists here.

New Yorkers and tourists like to celebrate New Year in Times Square. On New Year`s Eve, December 31, crowds of people stand in Times Square and wait for midnight. At midnight everyone shouts: “Happy New Year!” to everyone else.

Subway (underground) station near Ground Zero Memorial looks very unusual.

It`s difficult to get lost in New York. It has a very clever system of streets and avenues. Streets run east to west across the island and are often called cross-streets, while avenues run north to south down the island.

Most of the subway stations have the same names as the streets. The subway is a cheap, fast and easy way to see all the city. Buy a Metro Card at any subway station and the key to the city is in your hands.
