Вступление

Ведущий: Good morning dear friends! Today we devote our meeting to one of most important problems in the world - ecological problems. Let’s start our meeting and first have a talk about climate.

Climate

P: Many people say that nowadays the climate is going “crazy”. There are some facts proving it.

1. The summers of 1972, 2003, 2010 in Moscow were so hot that the forests around the capital caught fire, smoke filled the city and stayed for several days.

2. In winters of 2004, 2007 snow fell on the gondolas of Venice. In winter of 2003-2004 rather warm weather in Turkey and Italy suddenly changed with a snowfall, which lasted for a whole week.

3. Nowadays many European countries have terrible storms. The strong winds ruin a lot of buildings, trees, houses. Some countries are flooded (especially Germany), some suffered from heat (Spain, France, Italy), where a number of people die.

Ведущий: Let’s discuss these facts. What is climate? Is the climate always the same in this or that part of the world? Does it change?

P: Climate is the weather a certain place has over a long period of time. Climate has a very important influence on plants, animals and humans and is different in different parts of the world.

Ведущий: What can you say about the climate in Russia?

P: Russia is the largest country of the world. It lies on a huge territory from the cost of the Pacific Ocean to the centre of Europe. Its climate in the north, south, east and west is different. In the west the climate is usually mild and wet. At the same time the coldest place on the planet is in the north of Siberia. The taiga zone has long hard winters and short summers. Between the Black and Caspian seas it is very hot in summer.

P: Recently the climate has changed a lot in our country, especially in its Europian part. If you compare Moscow winter and summer temperatures at the beginning of the 20th century and at its end you will see that the climate has really changed. Winters have become warmer. Sometimes there is little snow in January, and there were winters when it rained (not snowed!) on the New Year’s Eve.

Ведущий: Some scientists think that the Earth’s climate is becoming drier and hotter in some places and wetter and colder in others. Why is it happening?

P: They say that it is so because of the greenhouse effect.

Ведущий: What is the greenhouse effect?

P: It works like this: sunlight gives us heat. Some of the heat warms the atmosphere, and some goes back into space. Nowadays the air surrounding the earth has become much warmer because the heat can’t go back into space. That’s why winter and summer temperatures in many places have become higher.

During the last 100 years people have produced a lot of carbon dioxide. This gas in the atmosphere works like glass in a greenhouse. It lets heat get in, but it doesn’t let much heat get out. So the atmosphere becomes warmer.

Ведущий: Where does the carbon dioxide come from?

P: People and animals breathe in oxygen, and breathe out carbon dioxide. We produce carbon dioxide when we burn things. Trees take this gas from the air, and produce oxygen, thus they help to restore natural equilibrium in the atmosphere. But in the last few years, people have cut down and burnt big areas of rainforest. This means there are fewer trees, and, of course, more carbon dioxide!

Ведущий: What are the possible results of the greenhouse effect?

P: Global warming is the main result of the greenhouse effect. It causes the rise of temperatures in many places, the weather patterns change and extreme weather events become more frequent. That will lead to drought and desertification. The glaciers and the ice caps will melt, that will mean extensive flooding. We are facing disastrous changes in climate unless we take some steps to cut greenhouse emissions.

Ведущий: Do you think our planet needs protection? Why? Make a resume.

P: We can see the weather pattern changing. This is caused by greenhouse effect (global warning). The climate in different parts of the world changes a little from year to year. These changes can be dangerous for our fragile planet which needs protection.

Natural world in dander

Ведущий: A lot of species of plants and animals are disappearing fast and can become extinct very soon. Why?

P: People kill animals for meat and fur and sometimes they hunt animals just for fun. A lot of endangered species – fish, reptiles, insects, birds, mammals – may disappear because Man destroys their habitats. It is not just animals that are in danger. So are plants. We cut down trees for our needs (furniture and paper production for example). Every year over 100 000 sq. km of forests are cleared for different uses, and a lot of forests are so badly damaged that they will hardly be able to recover. If we go on like this, by the time you are as old as your grandparents are now all the forests on earth can be destroyed.

Ведущий: There are some reasons why we must protect wildlife. What should be remembered if we want to have a healthy life in future?

P: Forests (especially rainforests) control the world’s weather. Cutting down trees (deforestation) means accumulation of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere (as the less the forests are the less oxygen is produced), which may lead to global warming. Forests also influence the amount of rainfall in the region.

P: Plans produce much of the oxygen in the air which people need for breathing. They absorb carbon dioxide and release (produce) oxygen, people on the contrary breathe in oxygen and breathe out carbon dioxide. That’s why people need trees to enrich the air with oxygen.

P: Wild plants can help to produce some medicines to cure dangerous diseases. Some parts of wild plants may contain chemical elements and their unknown combinations, which can be used to produce new medicines to cure dangerous diseases.

P: Our planet is a wonderful place to live on because there are so many beautiful flowers, trees and animals there. If we want to have a healthy life in future, we must remember that a lot of other creatures and plants need growing space too. Nature gives us everything. All we have to do is to use it carefully.

Ecological problems

Ведущий: Nowadays there are a lot of environmental problems. What does the word “environment” mean?

P: The word “environment” means what is around us. The air we breath, the soil on which we stand and walk, the water we drink are all part ov the environment.

Ведущий: What are the most serious environmental problems?

P: The most serious environmental problems are: water, air and nuclear pollution, noises from cars, buses, planes, destruction of wildlife and countryside beauty, shortage of natural resources.

Ведущий: What makes the sea waters dangerous nowadays?

P: The sea waters today are dangerous because they are polluted. There is no ocean or sea which is not used as a dump. Some oceans (the Pacific, for example) and seas also suffer from nuclear pollution, as they are used for dumping both industrial and nuclear waste. Britain alone dumps 250,000 tons of industrial waste into the North Sea. This poisons and kills fish and sea animals. Nuclear-poisoned fish can be eaten by people.

Ведущий: What about river and lake pollution?

P: Many rivers and lakes are poised too. Fish and reptiles can’t live in them. There is not enough oxygen in the water. In such places all the birds leave their habitats and many plants die. If people drink this water they can die too. It happens so because factories and plants produce a lot of waste and pour it into rivers. So they posion the water.

Ведущий: Where does air pollution in the cities mostly come from?

P: Most of the pollution in the cities comes from cars and buses.

Ведущий: Why are nuclear power stations dangerous?

P: Nuclear power stations can go wrong and cause nuclear pollution. This happened in Windscale in Britain, in Three Mile Island in the USA, in Chernobyl in the Ukraine, in Focusimo in Japan. Nuclear pollution cannot be seen but its effects can be terrible.

P: It may sound funny to you, but man needs protection and care as much as animal do. Peoples habitats – their homes, towns and cities – must be kept ecologically clean. In the places where people drink poisoned water, eat bad food and breathe polluted air they suffer from serious diseases and die early; their children are born weak. No medicines prescribed by the doctors can help them. This problem becomes more and more serious with every passing day. The modern way of life, when people do little physical activity, use cars instead of walking, watch television for many hours and work on computers is turning them into “legless creatures”.

Ведущий: Dear children, thank you for your interesting reports. Now let’s make a resume.

P: 1. Nowadays there a lot of environmental problems, the most serious of them are : water, air and nuclear pollution; destruction of wildlife and countryside beauty; shortage of natural resources.

2. People destroy many habitats of animals.

3. Nuclear power stations can cause a lot of trouble.

4. Man should solve ecological problems as soon as possible.

Man is beginning to understand that his environment is not just his own town or country, but the whole earth. That’s why people all over the world think and speak so much about ecology.

On the Picnic

Ведущий: What each of us can personally do to protect the environment? Let’s watch a scetch.

Сцена представляет собой лесную опушку. На сцене появляется группа школьников,

приехавших устроить пикник.

P: Let’s stay here. It’s a lovely place. The sun is shining, the birds are singing their beautiful songs. I’m sure we’ll have a very good time, have a lot of fun.

P: You’re right. What wonderful weather we are having today.

(Дети рассаживаются, включают громкую музыку, едят, пьют, танцуют под музыку. Через некоторое время они собираются покинуть место пикника, не убрав разбросанный мусор.)

P: Oh, what a pity. It’s time to finish our picnic.

(На сцене появляется Вика с подружками.)

V: Oh, what's happenning here?

F: We are shocked to see that the grove looks so terrible! It’s piled with rubbish!

F: We see you’re finishing your picnic and leaving all your rubbish on the ground. Why?

F: What are you going to do with all that litter you’ve left?

P: I don’t know what you mean.

P: Who are you? What do you want?

V: We are “Clean up the Countryside” society’s members.

F: We want our grove to be a clean and beautiful place.

F: We try to keep it clean, because we often come here to play.

V: Just think. Think about those bits of glass that you’ve left from your bottles of juice, of all those cola cans.

F: Think about how ugly the place looks littered like that.

F: It can also hurt wild animals.

P: You are right. We just can’t leave this rubbish here.

V: That’s right. Here take this bags and pick up all your rubbish.

(Дети собирают свой мусор в пакеты.)

PP: Thank you, girls, for helping us understand that the country is a beautiful place and that we must not spoil it.

All together: The country is a beautiful place and we must not spoil it !

End

Ведущий: Thank you very much, children. Audience, your applause ! As you see each of us can do a lot to protect the environment.
