  • Закрепление лексических и речевых навыков посредством анализа ранее прочитанного текста

Teacher: good morning, cadets. I’m glad to see you again. Hope things are going well with you. Let’s start our lesson.

Teacher: At the previous lesson we spoke about helicopters and during the independent work you read the text with basic information about helicopters. Today we are going to discuss the functions of helicopters. And perhaps you can answer the question which is urgent for many teenagers about your future profession.

Teacher: You have entered the secondary flying school. Why did you decide to enter this school? Do you want to be a pilot?

What type of aircraft do you want to fly? Have you ever thought about to become a helicopter pilot? Now I’m going to show you how interesting and useful this job can be.

Teacher: Due to the operating characteristics of the helicopter—its ability to take off and land vertically, and to hover for extended periods of time, as well as handling properties under low airspeed conditions—it has been chosen to conduct tasks that were previously not possible with other aircraft.

Helicopters can be used in many different ways. Today, helicopters are used for transportation of cargo and people, construction, fire fighting, military uses, search and rescue, tourism, medical transportation, aerial observation and a variety of other jobs that require special capabilities of the helicopter.

Military forces use attack helicopters to conduct air attacks on ground targets. Such helicopters are mounted with missile launchers and mini guns. Transport helicopters are used to ferry troops and supplies. Naval forces also use helicopters which can operate from ships.

Helicopters are used as air ambulances for emergency medical assistance in situations when an ambulance cannot easily or quickly reach the scene, or cannot transport the patient to a medical facility in time. Air ambulance helicopters are equipped to provide medical treatment to a patient while in flight.

Helicopters can be used as aerial cranes to carry heavy loads. They are often involved in the construction works.

Helicopters are used for aerial fire fighting (or water bombing) and may be fitted with tanks or carry helibuckets. They are also used to deliver fire fighters, who rappel down to inaccessible areas.

Police departments use helicopters to pursue suspects. Since helicopters can get a unique aerial view, they are often used in conjunction with police on the ground to report on suspects' locations and movements. They are often mounted with lighting and heat-sensing equipment for night pursuits.

Oil companies charter helicopters to move workers and parts quickly to remote drilling sites located out to sea or in remote locations.

Other uses of helicopters include, but are not limited to:

  • Aerial photography
  • Motion picture photography
  • Electronic news gathering
  • Reflection seismology
  • Search and Rescue
  • Tourism or recreation
  • Transport
