The Moscow Kremlin is an integral historical and architectural complex at the heart of Moscow.

Overlooking the Moskva River (to the south), Saint Basil`s Cathedral and Red Square (to the east), and the Alexander Garden and Manezhnaya (Manège) Square (to the west).

That`s from where Moscow once started. The Kremlin was first mentioned in the chronicles in 1147.

“Kremlin” means “fortress” and the Moscow Kremlin used to be a fortress.

Part 1 (слайды 8-22)

The irregular triangle of the Kremlin wall encloses an area of 275,000 square metres. The wall`s overall length is 2235 metres, but the height ranges from 5 to 19 metres, depending on the terrain. The wall`s thickness is between 3.5 and 6.5 metres.

The 20 towers of the Kremlin wall which give it a unique aspect were built at the end of the 17th century for decoration and have no military significance. The highest of all is the Spasskaya (Saviour) tower, built up to its present height of 71 metres in 1625 by an Italian architect Pietro Antonio Solari. The Spasskaya tower is the main tower with a through-passage on the eastern wall of the Moscow Kremlin, which overlooks Red Square. It is the symbol of Russia and Moscow. The clock, which we can see today, was installed in the middle of 19th century. It is familiar to all Russian people. One can hear its chimes on the radio. We see the New Year in by it. From 1935 to 1937 the five-pointed red ruby stars were placed on the five highest towers of the Moscow Kremlin. Before that the four towers of the Kremlin were decorated with two-headed eagles. In August 2010 the icon of Savior Smolensky was restored above the gate of the Spasskaya Tower. The Kutafia Tower and Troitsky Gates are open when there is some special events or a concert in the State Kremlin Palace (former Palace of Congresses). The Tainitzkaya Tower had a secret passage to the Moskva River. The Borovitskaya Tower was constructed in 1490 on the spot of an old Kremlin Gate by the Italian architect Pietro Antonio Solari. The Borovitskaya Tower gates are now open to any curious onlooker who wants to wander and enjoy sightseeing inside the Kremlin.

Part 2 (слайд 23 + Рисунок № 1, слайды 24-33)

Рисунок № 1

There are 3 gates nowadays …

Let`s begin our tour within the Kremlin walls by entering the Borovitsky Gates.

One of the well-known Kremlin museums is the Armoury Chamber. Here you can see many marvelous articles the true significance of which is connected with the history of the Russian state. The Museum holds unique collections of the Russian, West European and Eastern applied arts spanning the period from the 5th to the 20th centuries. The museum holdings and exhibitions consist of the precious items preserved for centuries in the tsars` treasury and in the Patriarch`s vestry. The Russian royal regalia are exhibited here – the famous Vladimir Monomakh Cap is on display. There is a rich collection of tsars and empresses garments. The Armoury has 10 Fabergé eggs – the world`s largest collection.

The Diamond Fund of Russia, part of the Kremlin Armoury Chamber, is a unique state collection of gold and silver works of great historical and material value, containing raw and carved stones, gold and silver nuggets, gems and jewelry.

Next to the Kremlin Armoury Chamber and the Diamond Fund of Russia we can see the Grand Kremlin Palace, the largest structure in the Kremlin. It was built from 1837 to 1849 on the site of the estate of the Grand Princes which had been established in the 14th century on Borovitsky Hill. Nowadays the Grand Kremlin Palace is the parade residence of Head of the State (not open for tourist). The west building of the palace holds state reception halls named for orders of Russian Empire: Georgievsky, Vladimirsky, Aleksandrovsky and Anreyevsky.

Part 3 (слайды 34-64)

Two basic ensembles frame the main squares of the Kremlin – Cathedral Square and the Ivanovskaya Square.

Cathedral Square is vast and majestic. The architectural treasures built 500 years ago are of unsurpassed beauty and splendor. Cathedral Square is the heart of the Kremlin. It is surrounded by six buildings, including three cathedral - the Cathedral of the Dormition, the Cathedral of the Annunciation and the Cathedral of the Archangel Michael.

The Cathedral of the Dormition is the mother church of the Muscovite Russia, the main church where all the Tsars were crowned. The Cathedral of the Dormition (also named Assumption Cathedral – Uspensky Sobor) was started in 1445 and completed in 1479. The interior of the cathedral is impressive; there are fine old frescoes, most of which were restored in the 20th century. In 1482, Dionysus, the best painter of the period, painted together with his team a three-row iconostasis and several large icons.

The Annunciation Cathedral standing next to the Great Kremlin Palace was built in 1489 as a private chapel for the royal family. Gilded, three-domed Cathedral was to be reconstructed to a nine-domed design a century later. Ivan the Terrible, who was disqualified from Orthodox Christianity after his 4th wedding, built a small extension so that he could watch the services from a gallery.

In the south-east of the square there is the much larger Cathedral of the Archangel Michael built in 1508 by the architect  Alevisio Novy. The cathedral contains frescoes dating to the 16th and 17th centuries. Almost all the Muscovite monarchs, Russian tsars and Grand Princes were buried within the cathedral until the 17th century, who remain there to this day (including Ivan I Kalita, Dmitri Donskoi, Ivan the Great, Ivan the Terrible). There are 54 burials in the cathedral.

The Ivan the Great Bell-Tower complex is the key of the Moscow Kremlin`s composition. It is the tallest of the bell towers ringing the Moscow Kremlin complex, with a total height of 81 meters. The Ivan the Great Bell-Tower separates Cathedral Square from Ivanov Square. It was built for the Assumption, Archangel and Annunciation cathedrals. They don`t have their own belfries. The Bell-Tower is said to mark Moscow`s precise geographic center. Until the building of the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, it was the tallest building in old Moscow, and it was forbidden to put any building in Moscow which was taller than the Bell Tower.

A tremendous three-storey building touches the northern side of Cathedral Square. It is the Patriarch`s Palace and the home Twelve Apostles` Church placed on high archway. The palace`s ground-floor was used for household needs and divisions` location. The first floor housed ceremonial halls and the home church, the second – private Patriarch`s quarters.

Facing the same square is a very beautiful building known as Faceted Palace (“Granovitaya Palata”) built at the end of 1491 by Marco Ruffo and Pietro Solari. Ivan III`s Palace of Facets (Faceted Chamber) is the oldest secular structure in Cathedral Square. In this palace the Moscow tsars held magnificent receptions in honor of foreign ambassadors.

“Terem Palace” or Teremnoy Palace is a historical building. It used to be the main residence of the Russian tsars in the 17th century. The third storey of the palace was occupied by the Tsaritsa and her children. The upper storey was a tent-like structure where the Boyar Duma convened. Currently the structure isn`t accessible to the public, as it belongs to the official residence of the President of Russia. The Teremnoy Palace contains several built-in churches.

Among other historical monuments on the Ivanovskaya Square of the Kremlin to the east of Ivan the Great Bell-Tower there is the Tsar Bell – a monument to the Russian cast art of the 18th century (1733 – 1735). Its weight is almost 202 tons, its height is 6,14 meters, its diameter is 6,6 meters. The bell was never rung – during a fire in 1737, a huge slab (11,5 tons) cracked off while it was still in the casting pit. For a time, the bell served as a chapel, with the broken area forming the door. The bell is currently the largest bell in the world.

Next to the Tsar Bell on the Ivanovsky Square between the Great Bell-Tower and the 12 Apostles Church there stands another historical monument – the Tsar Cannon, dating back to the 16th century. It was cast by Andrey Chokhov in 1586. This is a working cannon. The Guinness Book of Records lists it as the largest bombard by caliber.

Перед началом работы с 4 частью презентации:

а) вспоминаем (рассказывают) информацию второй и третьей части презентации,

в) даем ответы на вопросы домашнего задания.

Part 4 (слайды 65-79)

The Senate building adjoining Ivanovskaya Square was commissioned by Catherine II of Russia and designed by Matvey Kazakov. The construction of the Senate building lasted from 1776 to 1787. Currently it houses the Russian presidential administration. It is now the Russian President`s residence. Inside the majestic rotund, topped with a gigantic green cupola, the Yecaterininskiy (St. Catherine`s) hall is located. St. Catherine Hall is a place where President grants highest State awards.

The majestic Senate building faces the Arsenal building across the Senate Square. The Senate`s size is close to the Arsenal`s one. Both constructions are made level in height. The Arsenal was built for Peter I in 1701 to be used not only like an armory and ammunition storehouse but also like a museum-depository of captures and ancient weapons. During the Napoleon`s invasion its central part was blown up and restored between 1816 and 1828 in order to house a museum dedicated to the Russian victory over Napoleon. 875 cannons captured from the retreating Grand Army were put on display along the walls of the Arsenal. Of these, 365 are French, 189 are Austrian, 123 are Prussian, 70 are Italian and so on … The two-storeyed historical  building of the former Arsenal currently accommodates the Kremlin Regiment.

The Kremlin Regiment stands on guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier outside the Kremlin wall in Alexandrovsky Garden. To get there we must leave the Kremlin by Troitsky Gate and pass by a pompous building of the State Kremlin Palace (former Kremlin Palace of Congresses). It was built at the initiative of Nikita Khrushev as a modern arena for Communist Party meetings and was opened in October 1961. Presently it is used for official and popular concerts. It is the venue of the Kremlin ballet group. The Bolshoi Theater is also performing there.
