  • to talk about habitual, permanent situation using Present Simple;
  • to use mixed past tenses: Past Simple, Past Continuous.

I. Answer the questions:

a) Can you define “a happy person?”

b) Which things, experiences, people make you happy?

c) Can you think of anything that would make you happier?

d) What one thing do you think most people say would make them happier?

(Most of us believe that money will make us happy.)

e) Do you think we are happier today than fifty years ago?

(Cornell University economist Robert Frank in his book “Luxury Fever” says while most people earn more and speak more than ever before, increased wealth has not made them happier. Fewer Americans said they were happy in 1990 than in 1960.)

II. Vocabulary.

Read the dictionary entries for the following words.

III. Listening.

  1. You will hear a song called Happier than the birds about the people in the pictures. Predict what the song about.

Before reading.

a) Look at the title of the story. Which words do you think will be in the story?

b) Work in pairs.

Read this text very carefully and write down unknown words for you. Then stand up, go round the class, you can join another pair and find out the meaning of these words. Note down your useful words and help the others.

c) Read this story carefully. Some of the lines are correct but in the others there is a word which should not be there. If the sentence is correct, tick (V) it at the end in the space provided. The first two are giving as examples.

Money or a bride.

1. A rich king had a beautiful daughter who
2. was had his only child. Many men, who had
3. big houses, land and many the animals, asked
4. her to marry them. But there was also a poor
5. man, who did wanted to marry her! The king

18. In the end, he caught her! When the was contest
19. was over, the poor man received a large amount
20. of money and land from the king – and also
21. the beautiful old daughter as his wife. Both were very happy.

V. Speaking/Groups

To think about….

Each group got the questions for discussing. You should discuss them in your group then ask these questions to another group.

The questions of the First group:

  1. Is life the same as a race? Why?
  2. What is the most important in your life?
  3. Does it make you happy?
  4. Which people in this story are really free?
  5. What is real freedom?

The questions of the Second group:

  1. What do we have in our lives that stops us finding the best thing?
  2. Is there danger in money?
  3. Is money the same as happiness?
  4. Everything that the poor man receiver was free. He paid no bride price. Does God want to do the same for us?

    These phrases may help:

    a) How to give an opinion:

    * In our opinion…; *we believe…; *we think that…; * It seems to us;* to our mind…; *as for as we are able to judge…; *we’d like to know your opinion on the following;

    b) How to agree with an opinion:

    *We take our point; *we quite agree with you there; *that’s how we feel;*that’s exactly our opinion;

    c) How to disagree politely with an opinion:

    *We wouldn’t go along with you on that; *we are afraid, we are not really sure you are right; *we are afraid, you are wrong, it is not so; *it is not true to fact; *on the contrary.

    1. Complete the jokes:

  3. Complete the joke by using the correct tense of the verbs in brackets:

– Artificial! Give her the real thing. I’ll pay for it.

VII. Get talking.

  1. Imagine that you are allowed to have some of the gifts for your birthday. Choose three gifts which you think are the most important or useful and three which are the least important or useful.
  2. • Good health; • Plenty of money; • a king personality; • a nice house; • a brilliant mind; • an attractive face; • lots of adventure; • lots of friends; • a good job; • a fast car; • a happy marriage; • a long life; • an exciting love life; • an artistic talent.

  3. Compare your choice with other people in your group and agree on the three most important gifts.

The phrases may help:

  • Which is the most important thing for you?
  • I think the most important thing in life is…..
  • I think it’s much more useful/important to have ….that….
  • ….isn’t as important as….
  • The one thing I’d like to have is…
  • The one I think is most/least important is….
  1. Write a group list and then a class list.

So we can make a conclusion that money is not on the first place, therefore money is not the same as happiness.
