Ход урока

I. Организационный момент.

Good morning, children. Today we are going to speak about our Planet, about ecological problems.

Today’s Quotation is “Better to give than to take”.

II. Направленная речевая зарядка.

1. First think of the best way to express the same in Russian (слова и выражения на доске).

  • nuclear weapons (test, power stations)
  • to solve a problem
  • shortage of food (water)
  • destruction of ozone layer (seas and rivers)
  • a safe place

2. Make up not less than 6 sentences with these words and word combinations (1)

3. Translate these word combinations from Russian into English

  • решать проблемы окружающей среды;
  • загрязнение водной среды;
  • загрязнение воздуха;
  • разрушение, уничтожение живой природы;
  • проводить испытания ядерного оружия;
  • испортить озоновый слой;
  • причина катастрофы;
  • спасать мир;
  • нехватка еды, питья;
  • промышленные отходы.

III. Работа с текстом. (Учащимся предлагается новый текст).

1. Read the text and answer my questions.

The Fragile Planet

The word environment means simply what is around us. Some people live in a town environment; for others, their environment is the countryside. But the air we breathe, the soil on which we stand and walk, drink are all part of the environment.

Nowadays people understand how important it is to solve the environmental problems that endanger people’s lives. The most serious environmental problems are:

  • pollution in its many forms (water pollution, air pollution, nuclear pollution);
  • noise from cars, busses, planes, etc.;
  • destruction of natural resources (metals, different kinds of fuel);
  • the growth of population.

Water Pollution

There is no ocean or sea which is not used as a dump. The Pacific Ocean, especially, has suffered from nuclear pollution because the French Government tests nuclear weapons there. Many seas are used for dumping industrial and nuclear waste. Britain alone dumps 250,000 tons of industrial waste straight into the North Sea. This poisons and kills fish and sea animals. “Nuclear-poisoned” fish can be eaten by people.

Many rivers and lakes a poisoned too. Fish and reptiles can’t live in them. There is not enough oxygen in the water. In such places all the birds leave their habitats and many plants die. If people drink this water they can die too. It happens so because factories and plants produce a lot of waste and pour it into rivers. So they poison the water. Factories used clean water. After the water is used it becomes poison which goes back into rivers, lakes and seas.

Air Pollution

You certainly know that most of the pollution in big cities comes from cars and buses.

More and more often people are told not to be in direct sunlight, because ultraviolet radiation from the sun can cause skin cancer. Normally the ozone layer in the atmosphere protects us from such radiation can get to the earth. Many scientists think that these holes are the result of air pollution.

Nuclear power stations can go wrong and cause nuclear pollution. This happened in Windscale in Britain, in Three Mile Island in the USA and Chernobyl in the former Soviet Union. Nuclear pollution can’t be seen but its effects can be terrible.

To make air clean again we need good filters at nuclear power stations, at factories and plants and also in cars and buses.

Both clean air and clean water are necessary for out health. Man is beginning to understand that his environment is not just his own town or country, but the whole earth. That’s why people all over the world think and speak so much about ecology.

2. Answer my questions.

a) What does the world environment mean?
b) Does our environment have any problems?
c) What makes the sea waters dangerous nowadays?
d) Why is it dangerous to dump industrial waste in the sea?
e) Where does air pollution in the cities mostly come from?
f) Why is it not safe to be in direct sunlight in certain place?
g) Why are nuclear power stations dangerous?
h) What other ecological problems can you say?

3. Prove the following with the help of the text.

a) Nowadays there are a lot of environmental problems.
b) People destroy many habitats of animals.
c) Direct sunlight can be dangerous.
d) Nuclear power stations can cause a lot of trouble.
e) Man should solve ecological problems as soon as possible.

Ученики, хорошо владеющие английским языком делают обобщение по прочитанному.

IV. Аудирование. (Учащиеся слушают магнитофонную запись дважды.)

1. Listen to the conversation between Dave and Paul and say what problem is discussed in this dialogue.

Where Do You Want to Live?

Dave: Paul! You know, what? My father’s got a new job! We’re going to live in New York!

Paul: In New York? Really? Have you ever live in a big city?

Dave: No, I haven’t. Have you?

Paul: Yes, I have. I live in San Francisco with my grandparents for a few years. I didn’t like it there.

Dave: But why? Were there too many people or too much noise and traffic?

Paul: Yes, there were. And I don’t like crowds and pollution. There isn’t enough fresh air in big cities, you know.

Dave: You’re right. But there’re a lot of parks in New York, aren’t there?

Paul: There certainly are. But I’m sure there are a lot more cars and car parks there. I really prefer a quiet life in small country village.

2. Explain why people prefer to live in the country (to lead a quite life, to work outdoors, to take care of animals, to breathe fresh air, to eat healthy food).

V. Подведение итогов.

Today we have spoken about the most serious ecological problems.

But what can we do to protect the nature?

During today’s lesson I have

Учащиеся делают выводы и приходят к мысли “Better to give than to take”.
