Ход урока

Teacher – The word “environment” means simply what is around us. Some people live in a town environment; for others, their environment is the countryside. But the air we breathe, the soil on which we stand and walk, the water we drink are all part of the environment. The word “ecology” came from the Greek which means “home”. This idea of “home” includes the whole planet of ours. We must protect our planet from littering, air pollution, water pollution, destruction of natural resources.

1 pupil – We know that polluted air, land and water are harmful to plants, animals and people. Many territories, lakes, rivers, seas, oceans and the atmosphere are polluted with all kinds of technological, chemical, nuclear and other waists. Awful harm is caused to our home by nuclear tests, atom bombs and accidents on the atomic power stations.

2 pupil - How can we keep our planet clean? Don’t buy drinks in plastic bottles. These bottles can’t be recycled and plastic won’t even degrade. If you throw this bottle, it will still litter the earth forever. Only buy water and other drinks in aluminum cans or glass bottles. Buy milk and juice in cartoons. Glass, aluminum and cartoon can be recycled.

3 pupil – The electric power stations burn coal to produce the energy that keeps your light on. That burning coal gives off gases that – acid rains. So, save electric power. Turn off the lights when you leave the room. Turn off the TV or stereo when you are not watching or listening.

4 pupil – There is no ocean or sea which is not used as a dump. The Pacific Ocean, especially, has suffered from the nuclear pollution because the French Government tests nuclear weapons there. Many seas are used for dumping industrial and nuclear waste. Britain alone dumps 250,000 tons of industrial waste straight into the North Sea. This poisons and keels fish and sea animals. People can eat “Nuclear-poisoned” fish.

5 pupil – Many rivers and lakes are poisoned too. Fish and reptiles can’t live in them. There is not enough oxygen in the water. In such places, all the birds leave their habitats and many plants die. If people drink this water, they can die too. It happens so because factories and plants produce a lot of waste and pour it into rivers. So they poison the water.

6 pupil – More and more often people are told not to be on direct sunlight, because ultraviolet radiation from the sun can cause skin cancer. Normally the ozone layer in the atmosphere protects us from the radiation, but if there are holes in the ozone layer ultraviolet, radiation can get to the Earth. Many scientists think that these holes are the result of air pollution. Both clean air and clean water are necessary for our health. If people want to survive, they must solve these problems quickly. Man is beginning to understand that his environment is not just his own town or country, but the whole world. That’s why people all over the world think and speak so much about ecology.

Teacher – As you see, the pollution in all its forms is very dangerous for people, animals and plants. Now I’d like you to answer some questions:

  • What pollution is becoming quite bad? Have you ever thrown anything into a river or a lake? If so, what? Why? Have you ever washed your bicycle in a river or a lake? How dirty did it make the water?
  • Burning makes air pollution worse. Have you ever burnt rubbish or autumn leaves?
  • Most the pollution in big cities comes from cars. They also make a lot of noise. Does your family have a car? How often do you use it?

Teacher – And now, translate these words and word combinations from Russian into English and make sentences with them:

  • решать проблемы окружающей среды
  • загрязнение водной среды
  • загрязнение воздуха
  • использовать в качестве мусорной свалки
  • рыба, подвергшаяся ядерному заражению
  • сливать отходы в близлежащие реки
  • выжить.

Teacher – As you know, “Greenpeace” is an international environmental organization. Now let’s listen to some facts about it.

Pupil – A group of Canadian environmentalists founded “Greenpeace” in 1969. Members of Greenpeace appear in the places where the environment is endangered. They always act fast and bravely. The whole world knows about the Greenpeace actions to stop hunting whales or killing baby seals.

They block the way to the ships that try to dump waste, and work hard to create a nuclear-free world. Sometimes Greenpeace activity can be quite dangerous. For example, on July 10, 1985, the Greenpeace ship “Rainbow Warrior”, that was on its way to French Polynesia to protest against nuclear tests, was destroyed by French agents. It created serious international accident. Greenpeace has offices in many countries of the world including Russia.

Teacher – You imagined that the Greenpeace organization had asked you to design T-shirts telling people about ecological problems of the day. Now show your designs to the class.

Teacher – To finish our ecological lesson, let’s think, what can we do to save the world? English writer John Galsworthy said: “If you don’t think about the future you will not have it.” Do you think these words of advice can help? Which of them are the most important? What will you add?

  • Walk or use a bicycle instead of car.
  • Don’t litter with paper, cans or bottles.
  • Recycle used materials such as metal, bottles and paper.
  • Plant more trees.
  • Feed birds in winter and help them survive in the cold.
  • Save energy. Use less electricity and gas. Turn off the lights when you leave the room.
  • Clear rubbish from lakes and rivers.
