THE ZORGONS’ EXAM

ХОД УРОКА:

1. Warming up:

Hello, my friendly zorgons. We’re on the planet Zorg [2]. You’re preparing for the journey to the planet Earth. You’re going to visit this planet and make friends with humans. Now, you have to pass an exam and show that you’re ready to go. So, let’s start our exam!

First, you must greet the people. How will you do it? Show all possible ways to say hello (students greet each other in chain using different phrases and gestures).

Nice. But if you go to the planet Earth, you are to discuss the weather. It’s winter now. Describe the weather (s-s describe the weather).

And if you know so much about weather, sing a song about winter (s-s sing “Winter Chant”) [1].

2. Monologues (self presentations):

When you want to make friends with humans, you must present yourselves. These are coded questions on the whiteboard. Decode them please by changing word order:

your/ what/ name/ is?
are/ old/ you/ how?
where/ you/ from/ are?
favourite/ food/ is/ your/ what?
many/ people/ how/ are/ in/ family/ your?

Well done. Now present yourself according to this question plan (s-s present themselves as the planet Zorg inhabitants).

3. Similes (listening, matching, making questions):

Now we must study people and their characters. Listen to my descriptions of people and guess what adjective it is (teacher tells the description and s-s guess the trait):

A person who likes to play – playful

A person who has got a physical power – strong

A person who speaks not loudly – quiet

A person who wants to eat – hungry

A person who can not see – blind

A person who tells lies and false – sly

A person who works a lot – busy

A person who moves not quickly – slow

A person who is very clever and smart – wise

A person who isn’t good and kind – slippery

A person who thinks he’s the best in the world – proud

Now, you’ve guessed all the traits and you have to remember that people are like animals and they usually compare themselves with animals. Find the similes and make sentences with them (s-s in chain complete the phrases on the whiteboard and make the sentences with them orally):

As playful as ....a kitten ex. My little brother is as playful as a kitten.

As strong as ....an ox

As quiet as..... a mouse

As hungry as .....a wolf

As blind as ......a bat

As sly as .....a fox

As busy as .....a bee

As slow as .....a snail

As wise as ......an owl

As slippery as ......an eel

As proud as....... a peacock

4. Video (listening, reading and matching):

People like animals. We have received the message from the planet Earth. Watch the video and complete the sentences about animals with words (big, small, long, tall) [3]:

The elephant is …..big.

The giraffe is …….tall.

The tiger has got …big …eyes.

The lions are…. big.

The snake is very …long.

The snake has got ….small …eyes.

The giraffe has got ….long ….neck.

Its legs are …long...., too.

The elephant is …big. It’s got …..big ears and …..long trunk.

(Teacher plays the video and stops it in pauses for students to complete the sentences orally. If there’s no such a cassette teacher can use pictures of those animals and students have to finish the phrases logically).

5. Actions (reading, demonstration of actions, speaking):

If we study people in details, we must also talk about their expressions and gestures. You get a card with the word, demonstrate it, other students guess it and you make a sentence with it (Words on the handmade cards are: scream, wave, cough, sneeze, hiccup, yawn, whistle, laugh, wink, moan, shrug, scowl. S-s one by one choose any card, show the written action without a sound, the rest of the class guess the action and explain the situations when they are used):

ex. yawn s-ce: People usually yawn when they want to sleep.

6. Love story (reading, asking questions):

People often fall in love and they write love stories. Read “A Love Story”, but some places in this story are missed. Ask your partner on the left to help you in completing your variant of this story (s-s get 2 different variants of the story [see Приложение 1], they have to fill the spaces by asking questions in Present Simple to the partner. S-s work in chain. The story is attached to the plan).

This is the sad story about love, but don’t be upset. Let’s sing a song about human’s busy every day (s-s sing “Every Day Busy Chant”) [1].

7. Round up:

You worked so hard today and I think all of you have passed the exam successfully and now you are ready to go to the planet Earth. Take your tickets – Bon voyage!
