Let’s begin our lesson. The topic of today’s lesson is the land and the people of Great Britain. We start with the phonetic drill.

There was a lady who lived in Belfast
She was fond of making breakfast
But her husband left for Liverpool
In order to buy a rubber swimming-pool.

Before speaking about the UK let’s revise some proper names.
Who will tell us about geographical position of the UK?
Now answer my questions:
What is the official name of the state which is situated in the British Isles?
What countries does the UK consist of?
What is the capital of Scotland (Wales)?
What sea separates the two islands?

Listen to the dialogue about the people of the UK and be ready to answer the questions.

  • - Let’s speak about the people of the UK. You know that everyone who was born in Britain is British. People from England are English.
  • - Yes. But what about people from Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland?
  • - They are not English. They are Scottish, Welsh and Irish. By the way, they don’t like when they are called English.
  • - It’s really very interesting. Do you know how many people live in Britain?
  • - More than 56 million live there.
  • - In what cities do they live?
  • - Many of them live in big industrial cities like London. Manchester and Liverpool are big industrial cities in the centre of England.
  • - I know that there are many lonely hills, quiet rivers, deep lakes and just farmlands especially in the south of the country.
  • - Yes, you are quite right.

Scotland takes up one third of the territory of the British Isles. Its population is not very big.
Scotland is divided into 3 regions: the Highlands, the Lowlands and the Southern Uplands.
There are many valleys which are filled with lakes, called lochs.
The best-known is Loch Ness where as some people think a large monster lives.
Most of the population of Scotland is concentrated in the Lowlands.
Glasgow is Scotland’s biggest city but it is not its capital.
Edinburgh has been the capital since the 15th century. It’s a cultural centre.
It’s associated with the names of George Byron, Walter Scott, Robert Burns.
Scotland’s emblem is a thistle.
