English Teacher: Good morning, dear friends! Glad to see you! We are going to have an unusual lesson today. So, will you make some predictions? How do you think, what we will do at our lesson today?

Future Simple).

English Teacher: Thank you! At the end of the lesson we’ll see whose prediction will come true. Children, many people think that traveling is the most interesting pastime. What do you think about it?

English Teacher: I see… And what about virtual traveling? You know the Internet gives us such opportunity. Let’s play a game today. Imagine that I’m an agent of an International Tourist Agency and you are eager tourists. So let’s start.

Ladies and gentlemen! I welcome you in our International Tourist Agency. Today we have an interesting proposal to you. Look here! I’ve got two tickets to New York. I invite you to travel. Our traveling will be absolutely free of charge. The only fare is to show your knowledge in history, geographical situation, streets, parks, skyscrapers and other sights and parts of New York. Those who have got the best knowledge will get these tickets. Do you agree? So let’s start! To organize a competition we’ll divide into two groups. Please groups, present you.

Pupil I: Our group is called “Broadway” because it is the name of the central and the most attractive streets for tourists. I am the leader of the group. My name is …

Pupil II: Our group is called “Manhattan” because it is the heart of New York, its financial, business and cultural centre. My name is …

English Teacher: Thank you, leaders. The first round! Children! Here is the proverb for you: “There are many apples on the tree, but only one big apple”. How is this proverb connected with New York?

P.I: Because New York is the biggest city in the USA and the third biggest in the world.

P.II: Because New York is the business and financial centre of the USA, и т.д.

English Teacher: (Удар гонга) The second round! Now I want you to give some general information about New York – America’s Big Apple. I see the group of “Manhattan” is ready to speak. Who will speak in your group?

Pupil I: (примерный рассказ) New York is on the Hudson River. Another name of New York is Big Apple. It consists of five boroughs: Manhattan, Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn and Staten Island. The heart of New York is Manhattan. It has a lot of attractions. One of them is the Empire State Building. It is the tallest skyscraper in New York but only since September11, 2001. One of New York’s most famous museums is the Guggenheim Museum. It’s famous for its building, which was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. Those who are interested in theatre will be able to enjoy different musicals and shows on Broadway. The fastest way to see New York is by Metro. You need to buy a MetroCard and it will take you all over the city.

English Teacher: Thank you. Are there any questions to the speaker?

Pupil II: What does the date September 11, 2001 mean?

Pupil I: It means the tragic date for the people of the USA. On that day terrorists destroyed the twin towers of the World Trade Centre.

English Teacher: (Удар гонга) The third round! What can you say about streets and avenues of New York?

The group of “Broadway”, it’s your turn now. Who will speak in your group?

Pupil I: It’s very difficult to get lost in New York. Streets run east to west across the island and are often called cross-streets, while avenues run north to south down the island. To find a place it is very important to know the nearest cross-street and avenue to the address. Fifth Avenue divides Manhattan Street addresses into east and west. Avenues between the Hudson River and Fifth Avenue are west of Fifth Avenue; other avenues are east of Fifth Avenue. That means that every street has two sides: east and west. Broadway isn’t just one of the longest avenues in Manhattan. It is also famous for the small area near Times Square where Broadway crosses Seventh Avenue. This is the home of many Broadway theatres.

English Teacher: Thank you. Are there any questions to the speaker?

Pupil II: Excuse me, could you tell me where The Empire State Building is?

Pupil I: It’s between 34th and 36th streets and between 5th and 6th avenues.

English Teacher: Thank you. (Удар гонга) The fourth round! Every country is proud of its famous people. They may be scientists, actors, writers or sportsmen. But this man was a businessman, a rich aristocrat. His name was John Rockefeller. What do you know about him?

Pupil II: John Rockefeller II was a rich aristocrat, but he didn’t just believe in money, he believed in people, too. When he decided to build these buildings during the Great Depression, he got no help from the government. So he used his own money to do it. Rockefeller was quite an interesting man.

English Teacher: Let’s go and read his own words on that sign in front of the building.

  1. I believe in the supreme worth of the individual and in his right to life, liberty, and happiness.
  2. I believe that every right implies a responsibility; every opportunity – an obligation; every possession – a duty.
  3. I believe that the law was made for man and not man for the law; that government is the servant of the people and not their master.
  4. I believe in the dignity of labor, whether with head or hand; that the world owes no man a living but that it owes every man an opportunity to make a living.
  5. I believe that truth and justice are fundamental to an enduring social order.
  6. I believe in the sacredness of a promise, that a man’s word should be as good as his bond; that character – not wealth or power or position – is of supreme worth.
  7. I believe in an all-wise and an all-loving God, named by whatever name. The individual’s highest fulfillment, greatest happiness, and widest usefulness are found in living in harmony with His will.
  8. I believe that love is the greatest thing in the world; that it alone can overcome hate; that right can and will triumph over might.

English Teacher: Thank you, boys and girls! I see you are a little bit tired. Let’s go to one of New York’s restaurants and have a snack.

Pupil I: Oh, please, don’t take us to a posh restaurant. I’m sure it’ll be expensive.

English Teacher: Mind your manners, children. Never argue with your teacher. New York has something to everybody. Look, it’s Carnegie Deli. I wonder, what does the word Deli mean?

Pupil II: It means delicacies.

English Teacher: This restaurant is famous for pastrami, corned beef and blintzes. Can you explain these words?

Thank you. Let’s look through the Menu of this restaurant. Waiters, advertise the Menu, please!

English Teacher: Children, imagine that I’m a foreigner, sitting at one table with you. I ask your advice about Russian dishes. What will you advise me to try?

English Teacher: Thank you. I have a special dish for you, too. Take it please and make up as many words as you can.

-ful, -able/ible, -al, -less, -un

use, peace
wonder, comfort
enjoy, nature
hope, sense
help, change
politics, success
music, meaning
fashion, color

English Teacher: Now that we have had our dinner I want to ask you, “What are the main advantages and disadvantages of “Carnegie Deli”?

Pupil I: The main advantages of “Carnegie Deli” are big portions, New York atmosphere, delicious food, free pickled cucumbers, quick service, homemade soups, fresh food, international food and huge sandwiches.

Pupil II: The main disadvantages of “Carnegie Deli” are long lines, you share your table with strangers, you can’t share your portion with your friends, when you finish your food you have to leave quickly, not enough seats and high prices.

English Teacher: Children, now we can go on our excursion. You know there are many famous monuments in any city, but there is one in New York that is famous all over the world. It’s the Statue of Liberty, of course. I know Oksana is ready to speak about it. Only be attentive because she will ask you some questions about it.

English Teacher: Children, every country, as well as, every city has its own history. What is the history of Manhattan? Dasha has prepared a report on this question. You are welcome, Dasha. №2)

Thank you. Good for you! And you, children? Were you attentive? Everybody of you has this test paper. Look through the sentences, please. Mark the right variant with “plus” and the false variant with “minus”. I’ll give you two minutes to do the task.

Put a “+” if the sentence is true and put a “-“if the sentence is false:

Sentences True/false
1 In the year 1626 Red Indians sold Manhattan for 24 dollars
2 The island lay at the mouth of the Harlem river

It’s a waste of time.
It’s a lot of fun.
I’d recommend it to anybody.

- Clothes show my individuality.

- “Clothes make the man” they say and I agree. My clothes have to be the latest fashion. И т.д.

English Teacher: Oh, I see… Tastes differ. Boys and girls, we still have time to walk along and see the sights of New York. Everybody knows that skyscrapers are the symbol of New York. What are the most famous of them?

English Teacher: Do you know what the main parts of Manhattan are?

Lower Manhattan, Midtown, Upper Manhattan.

English Teacher: Your last task is to fill in the test papers (см. №5). Look them through and mark the right variants.

Are you ready? OK! Hand them in! Children, I want to ask your opinion, “Who was the best in the group of Manhattan?”
