The “Town Hall” Museum

The “Masharov Mansion” Museum

The Museum of the History of the House

The “Church of Sts Peter and Paul” Museum.

The boulevard.

The Monument “Farewell”

The “Town Hall” Museum.

The “Town Hall” Museum is situated in Republic Street. The building was constructed in the second half of the nineteenth century. Although small in size, it looks imposing. It is an illustrative example of the style of Russian provincial architecture.

Visitors to The Town Hall can see the permanent exhibition “The Museum and Nature” which shows a rich variety of flora and fauna in Tyumen region. Particularly impressive are its most ancient “inhabitants”. People can see the collection of the complete skeletons of a mammoth, a fossilized bison and other exhibits. The most spectacular part of the collection devoted to natural history is its zoological section. It is noteworthy for a wide variety of represented animals, birds and insects.

The “Masharov Mansion” Museum

The “Masharov Mansion” Museum was opened in 1994. The building of the museum, a stone mansion, is a monument of history and architecture of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. The estate belonged to the famous Tyumen industrialist, the founder of cast – iron production in the town, Nikolai Masharov.

The project of the mansion in neo – Classical style was designed by the town's architect P.K. Chakin. Thanks to the efforts of restorers and museum research workers the major part of the interior of the house – the decor of the stoves, fireplace, ceiling mouldings, attic, doors, wooden floors, inner staircase and verandah – has been reconstructed. The reconstruction of the interior and the mounting of the exhibition named “The Family Album” there helped to re-create an atmosphere of urban life in the distant past. The display consists of photographs, documents and personal belongings of several Tyumen families – the Afromeyevs, Vorobeichikovs, Gilevs, Rogozinskus, Margins and Masharovs. The exhibition of the “Masharov Mansion” Museum vividly shows the picture of life customs and traditions of Tyumen industrialists and merchants.

The “Church of Sts Peter and Paul” Museum.

The “Church of Sts Peter and Paul” Museum is situated on the high picturesque bank of the Tura River within Tyumen. The Church dating from the mid – eighteenth century is a very rare type of religious building for Russia. In 1924 the monastery was closed. The Church of St Peter and Paul, in a state of neglect for many years, was weather – beaten and dilapidated. In 1987, after restoration, the building began to be employed for museum exhibitions. The materials of the display “From the History of Christianity in Siberia” provide an account of the reconstruction of churches and monasteries. Early manuscripts and the first printed books, church plate, a collection of gold embroidery of the seventeenth to nineteenth century and of course icons, can be seen here.

The Museum of the History of the House

The Museum of the History of the House is a gem of Tyumen wooden architecture. The old mansion originally belonged to the Ikonnikov merchant family. In 1996 it became the home of an unusual museum – the exhibition introduces visitors to major turning – points in the history of Russia, to dramatic human destinies and memorable events.

In 1837 Tsesarevich Alexander Nikolayevich, the heir to the Russian throne, stayed in this building. The boat build by Tyumen craftsmen for ferrying the Tsesarevich across the Tura to the Tobolsk road, became the property of Tyumen. Its model is now on display in the museum.

In 1919 the house was the headquarters of the Commander of the 51st Rifle Division of the Red Army Vasily Blucher, the first holder of the order of the Red Banner. The memorial belongings associated with him are shown in a newly re – created study.

The exhibition of this museum also includes wax effigies – the first display of this kind in Siberia.

The Monument “Farewell”

The Monument “Farewell” is devoted to the school leavers of Tyumen who didn't return from the Great Patriotic war. It was founded in 1991 on the initiative of the students of the city who had studied at school during the war.

Annually on the 22 nd of June school leavers who are still alive meet near this monument to honour their perished schoolmates.

The Boulevard.

The boulevard is the most favourite place of all the inhabitants and visitors of our city. It is popular with children, young people and grown – ups. You can always find the best way of entertainment there. You may either go to the circus or go in for sports at the stadium. If you are hungry, it's possible to eat at different cafes or just to buy some ice cream and soft drinks. Different merry – go rounds are also at your disposal. Strolling along the boulevard in summer you can admire wonderful flowers, trees and astonishing fountains. You may ‘shake hands’ or be photographed with our favourite clowns Yuri Nikulin, Karandash and some others.

Teacher: So, girls how do you appreciate our students' knowledge of Tyumen sights?

Activity 5: Interview ‘Applying for a job’.

Teacher: (To the representatives of the travel agency) It's high time you had a job interview.

You may come up to the groups and speak with them for some minutes in order to choose an applicant for the interview.

(Each representative of the agency speaks with the whole group and chooses an applicant for the interview. Three interviews)
