Answer: envelope

T: OK. What will we speak about? (We’ll speak about letters).

  • Why will we speak about letters? (We’ll speak about letters because people don’t write their friends and use phone and Internet)
  • Do you write letters to the newspapers or magazines? Would you like to write these letters? Why? Can you write the official letter?
  • So, what will we know today? (We’ll know the parts of the official letter and learn to write the official letter correctly in English)
  1. 2. Актуализация знаний. Речевая зарядка: answer the questions
  • Do you like writing letters? (Yes, I like. / No, I don’t like)
  • What kind of letters are hard to write? (Formal letters are difficult to write)
  • What kind of letters are easy to write? (Informal letters are easy to write)
  1. 3.Объяснение нового материала.

T: When you are writing a formal letter, it is important to include the correct parts and arrange the parts in the correct order.

Ex. 1 Let’s discuss the plan of the letter. This is a formal letter, not one you would write to a friend. Go through the parts to make sure you have understood all the vocabulary. Label the different parts of the letter on the plan. (Draw the plan of the letter on the board and ask students to come up and label it.)

Name the parts of a formal letter. Use the greeting, the topic, the close, the date, the sender’s address, the main part, the sender’s signature and name, the receiver’s name and address.

Answers: 1 – the sender’s address, 2 - the receiver’s name and address, 3 - the date, 4 - the greeting, 5 - the topic, 6 - the main part, 7 - the close, 8 - the sender’s signature and name.

  1. Первичное закрепление нового материала.

Ex. 2 Read and identify the eight parts of the letter. Then, in pairs, match each part of the letter to the plan in ex. 1.

  1. 15 January
  2. We are the representatives for Year 10, Class 2. This year, the class is studying Animal Biology. If it were possible, we would like to come and visit the zoo together, especially to look at the reptile house. Many of us are doing projects about snakes or crocodiles, and we would like to collect as much information as we can.

We would also like to know if there are price reductions for groups of schoolchildren.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Ex. 3 Answer the questions about the letter in ex. 2, then check your answers in pairs. Then check and discuss the answers with the whole class.

  • Who wrote this letter? (The class representatives, Teresa O’Brien and Sanjay Amphora.)
  • Who did they write to? (The manager of London zoo)
  • Why did they use the greetings Dear Sir or Madam? (Because they didn’t know if the manager was a man or a woman)
  • What was their general reason for writing the letter? (Their class wanted to visit the zoo)
  • Give two specific reasons for writing the letter. (They wanted to collect information about the reptile house. They wanted to know about price reduction)
  • Explain We look forward to hearing from you in your language. (Student’s own answers)
  • How did they close their letter? (Yours faithfully)
  • Why did they word-process the letter? (Because it looks official than a hand-written letter – and because they can use the same letter outline to write to other places their class wants to visit)

T: Read Professor Goodwrite’s advice! Give examples of when you would use each of the endings, e.g. Yours sincerely on a letter to a company asking for a holiday job, Best wishes on a letter to a friend, etc.
