SCOTLAND – BONNIE SCOTLAND

There are two Scotlands.
The first is the modern, dynamic country on the edge of Europe.
The second is the legend of Scotland: the home of whisky, golf and Bagpipes.
Scotland's two busy cities of Glasgow and Edinburgh are the focus of today's country. Both have benefited from North Sea Oil and have an optimistic view of the future.
Edinburgh, with its castle, its old houses and narrow streets and steps. The monument to Sir Walter Scott. The famous Princes' Street.
Glasgow, the industrial heart of Scotland. A huge city, with energy and enthusiasm.
Shipbuilding was once a great industry. But now it has been replaced by new, high technology industries, and by commerce and tourism.
New hotels and offices are changing the way Glasgow looks.
And poor quality housing is being demolished.
Many older streets and buildings have been improved.
Outside the two main cities there is some beautiful scenery: mountains, glens and lochs. And there are more castles, like this one at Stirling To the north and west lie remote and unspoilt islands.
The history of Scotland is marked at every step by the history of England.
Scotland and England have fought many, many wars.
The last and most famous ended at Culloden when the English defeated the army of Bonnie Prince Charlie.
The Prince escaped to the Isle of Skye and then to France.
One of Scotland's most beautiful songs was written about him crossing over to the Isle of Skye.
Here are two of Scotland's best known products: whisky, to drink: haggis, to eat. Both are part of Scottish tradition.
One final tradition is the Loch Ness Monster. Most people don't believe in it.
In fact it is probably true that the monster doesn't exist.
Loch Ness is 36 kilometers long and 230 metres deep.
