1. History of the holiday:

Few holidays tell us as much of the past as Halloween. Its origins date back hundreds of years to the Druid festival of Samhain, Lord of the Dead and Prince of Darkness, who, according to Celtic belief, gathered up the souls of all those who had died during the year to present them to Druid Heaven on October 31.

The Druid New Year began on November 1, marking the beginning of winter and the reign of the Lord of Death. The Druids called upon supernatural forces to placate the evil spirits, and it is from that tradition that modern Halloween gets the parade of ghosts, goblins, witches, skeletons, cats, masks and bonfires.

The custom of telling ghost stories on Halloween also comes from the Druids.

As Christianity replaced the pagan religions, the church set aside November 1st to honor all saints (all-hallows) and called it All Hallows' Day. The evening before October 31st, became All Hallows' Even — later shortened to Halloween.

All Hallows' Even> Halloween).

2. History of the holiday:

Halloween was first celebrated many centuries ago in Ireland and Scotland by Celtic priests called Druids. Later Halloween was brought to America by the immigrants from Ireland and Scotland. In the 19th century they celebrated Halloween according to their own traditions The Druids thought that Halloween was the night when the witches came out. As they were afraid of the witches they put on different clothes and painted their faces to deceive the evil spirits. They also placed food and small gifts near the doors of their houses for the witches. This was, as they say now, the beginning of the expression "trick or treat ".

As time went by, grown-up people lost interest in Halloween, and it was celebrated mostly by children. Dressed very strangely, children held festivals. During their carnival and after it, groups of children visited houses and asked for candies. "Trick or treat! Trick or treat!" was heard everywhere.

In recent years, grown-up people have begun taking part in Halloween. In New York, for example, young and old take part in parades together. On the 31st of October, long before the time when the carnival procession begins to move, a great number of people get together in one of the streets. They are dressed as witches or demons. There are hundreds of large "pumpkins" in their hands. After the parade the festival lasts almost till early morning. This is how Americans celebrate Halloween.

(Tелепрограмма “While at home”(“Пока все дома”) (Рисунок 3)

Pupil 1: Each holiday has its own symbols and traditions, as I know. Are there anything interesting and unusual about this holiday ?

Pupil 2: Of course? There are many of them. The emblems and symbols of Halloween are witches with their broom sticks, ghosts and skeletons, vampires and monsters, goblins and spiders and many other scary and horrible things.

Pupil 1: What about the traditions? Are there any?

Pupil 2: There are some traditions. And the most well-known is the tradition to tell scary stories.

Pupil 1: Scary stories?

Pupil 2: Yes. Usually people crowd together around a fire on Halloween night. And one person tells a scary story in a low voice. For example:

In a Dark, Dark Room

In a dark, dark wood, there was a dark, dark house.
And in that dark, dark house, there was a dark, dark room.
And in that dark, dark room, there was a dark, dark chest.
And in that dark, dark chest, there was a dark, dark shelf.
And on that dark, dark shelf, there was a dark, dark box.
And in that dark, dark box, there was – A GHOST!

Now there is our section “Beasts of mine”. C. “Beasts of mine” (“Зверьё моё”)

Pupil1: The main symbols of Halloween are three animals: spider, bat and black cat. Spider is a rather pretty insect with 8 legs. They may be tiny and giant. Just as our friend Bobby.

Pupil 2: One of pretty symbols of Halloween is a night pilot –bat. Bats are very small. But their wings can be very wide, so people are often afraid of them.

Pupil 3: And the most favourite animal of Halloween is THE BLACK CAT. In many countries black cats are connected with unlucky superstitions. Very often people come back or step with left leg when they meet a black cat. And they should spit by all means.

THE BLACK CAT ( Song)

Black cat, black cat!
What do you think of that? Scat!

Slowly slinking in the night
Eyes that glow with golden light.
Black cat, black cat!
What do you think of that? Scat!

Purring softly, can't be seen
He'll come out on Halloween.
Black cat, black cat!
What do you think of that? Scat!

D. Tелепрограмма “While at home”

Two more very interesting symbols of the holiday are Jack –o – Lantern and costume of witch.

And now our section “Skilfool Hands” presents us these beautiful things and even tells how to make them.

“Skilfool” hands (“Оч.Умелые ручки”) (Рисунок 7):

Дети рассказывают о том, как изготавливали фонарь из тыквы и костюм ведьмы. Один ученки читает стихотворение о фонаре

Pupil 1: Jack –o lantern is the most celebrated Halloween decoration. To make it you should do the following;

Jack-o-Lantern

Cut the bottom of the pumpkin.
– Take out the pulp from inside the pumpkin.
– Cut two eyes, a nose and a mouth on one side of the pumpkin
– Stand a candle in the bottom piece of the pumpkin.
– Put "the head" over the candle and light the candle.

JACK-0-LANTERN

Pupil 2:

Sometimes big and sometimes small,
But always round and yellow.
When children make my mouth grin
Then I'm a scary fellow.

Pupil 1:

To make a costume of witch you should take a very black dress with long sleeves.
– Then cut a piece of material into two smaller.
– After that you should cut these pieces into the form of wings and sew them to the sleeves.
– The costume is ready.

E. Advertising (реклама) (Рисунок 8)

And now it`s time for Advertising

1. WITCHES' BREW

Dead leaves, seaweed, rotten eggs, too;
Stir them in my witches' brew.
I got magic, ala-ka-zama-ka-zoo.
Spider web, mouldy bread, mucky mud, too;
Stir them in my witches' brew.
I got magic, ala-ka-zama-ka-zoo.
Ooh, my witches' brew.
Ooh, what's it gonna do to you? Boo!

Floorwax, thumbtacks, purple paint, too;
Stir them in my witches' brew.
I got,, magic, ala-ka-zama-ka-zoo.
Fingernails, lunch pails, apple cores, too;
Stir them in my witches' brew.
I got magic, ala-ka-zama-ka-zoo.
Ooh, my witches' brew.
Ooh, what's it gonna do to you? Boo!
Wrinkled prunes, mushrooms, motor oil, too;
Stir them in my witches' brew.
I got magic, ala-ka-zama-ka-zoo.
Yeah, year, I got magic, ala-ka-zama-ka-zoo.

Pupil 1: I recommend this Brew for bad pupils to become good and for good ones to become better. You should drink it once a day before going to school.

F. “You`ll have a child”:
(рубрика “У вас будет ребенок”) (Рисунок 9)

Учитель представляет рубрику “У вас будет ребенок”.

And at last our section about children.

Pupil: During the Halloween people may have at home not 1, 2, 3 but even more children.

Because of a funny tradition of Halloween.
The children go from house to house and knock at the doors.
They say, "Trick or treat".
If you give them something nice, a 'treat', they go away.

However, if you don't, they play a 'trick' on you, such as making a lot of noise or spilling flour or water on your front doorstep!

People give them sweets, fruit, cakes and many other tasty things.
This is a nice, fun and tasty autumn holiday, isn't it?
So, now you`ll have some children.

Trick-or-treat rap

The sky is black, the moon is white
Do you know tonight's the night
When witches fly above the sheet
And boys and girls say trick-or-treat

Trick-or-treat, trick-or-treat
This is the rhythm of the street
Trick-or-treat, trick-or-treat
This is the rap with the spooky beat .

The wind is cold, the stars are bright
Do you know tonight's the night
While ghosts say BOO when they meet
And boys and girls say trick-or-treat

And now I want you to tell about the most interesting moments of their stories. You may use the cards which I gave you at the beginning of our lesson and tell us about your impressions and feelings and facts you liked.
