Good afternoon, dear colleagues and students! We are very glad to see you at the parade of English traditions. Today we gather here as we are going to solve the problem: which team is the best and brightest. For this reason let me introduce you the jury. Ladies, take your places, please! I hope you will be equitable enough. Good luck to everyone! Let us start!

GAME I

INTRODUSING

Let the teams introduce themselves!

Every country has its own traditions and customs. In Britain traditions play a very important role on the life of people mostly because the British are very conservative. They are proud of their traditions and keep them carefully.

Great Britain is a tradition itself. Must the Monarchy stay or must not? We really don’t know. People don’t differentiate between the words “monarchy” and “royal family.” As Winston Churchill said monarchy is not perfect but the best that the man had ever created.

While watching the presentation be very attentive as after it you’ll do a quiz.

I hope you’ve known new facts about Elizabeth II. Now look at the screen and answer the quiz questions. You may consult with each other.

GAME IV

THE QUICKEST CHEF

Today we are going to present you some of the most popular English traditions. The pupils of the 8th form will tell you about Pancake Day which is celebrated on Shrove Tuesday in Spring at the beginning of Lent. Lent is a period of 40 days before Easter.

Pupil 3: Well, on this day in England families usually have pancakes for dinner. At schools the children and teachers have pancakes for school dinner, and in restaurants customers ask for pancakes, too. Everyone knows that pancakes are delicious to eat, but do you know how to cook them?

Pupil 3: Let's arrange the instructions for making pancakes in the right order.

GAME V

A PANCAKE RACE

Pupil 4: So, let's imagine that we have already made our pancakes. Do you know that in England people not only eat them but race with them? Now we are going to have a pancake race at our school. I invite those who will take part in the race to take frying pans with pancakes on them and to take places at the end of the hall. You must run towards me tossing your pancakes 3 times during the race. The winner is a pupil who comes first and doesn't drop his pancake. So, be careful.

GAME VI

A PANCAKE FIGHT

Pupil 5: Another tradition is the Pancake fight when a cook tosses a pancake high into the air. The boys fight for the pancake. The winner is the boy who gets the biggest piece of the pancake. So, now I invite you to fight for the pancake. Even if you don't win, you will get a pancake for dinner.

GAME VII

CHRISTMAS QUIZ

Pupil 3: Thank you for your presentation and active participation in the competitions. Now, let's give the floor to the pupils of the 7th form. They are going to present another English tradition — Christmas.

Pupil 4: Today we are going to talk about Christmas. Do you know much about this holiday? Let's have a quiz and define the winner.

GAME VIII

CHRISTMAS CARD

Oh, I see some of you have already got Christmas presents. It's a very good tradition, isn't it? But there is one more pleasant thing people do before Christmas: they send Christmas cards to their friends, relatives and beloved ones to congratulate them with the coming year and to express their wishes on this occasion. Now I suggest having a competition for the best Christmas card. I invite one pupil from each form to come up to me. Here you can see some posters and coloured pencils. During three minutes you will be writing a Christmas card to any person you want. Try to make your message humorous, mind your grammar and spelling.

Pupil 5: While the participants of our competition are busy writing, I'll tell you about the history of sending Christmas Cards.

In the mid-19th century in London there lived a man, Henry Cole by name. Every year he sent short notes to his friends at Christmas, but in 1843 he had no time for letter writing, so he asked an artist John С Horsley, to design a card with the printed message that would substitute his annual greeting. His request inspired a billion dollar industry and added a tradition of sending Christmas cards.

Pupil 1: Now let's see what the results of our competition are. We should take into consideration spelling, grammar mistakes, special character of the message, design, etc.

Pupil 5: So, we've got Christmas presents and Christmas cards. What else do people usually do at Christmas? Yes, they sing. Carol-singing at Christmas is a very old custom. All over the country groups of people (young and old) sing in the streets and outside people's houses. The centre of carol-singing in London is Trafalgar Square. Can we sing here? Do you know any carols? If not, you may take these sheets of paper with the texts of carols and let's try to sing together.

There is no person who does not know about such English tradition as 5 o'clock. And it is common knowledge that the English are very proud of tea. They like to have "a nice cup of tea" 6 or 8 times a day, sometimes even more. Tea is not only a drink, but a meal too. Of course, it's a very light meal and as the English say "it’s the time when everything stops for tea."

GAME XI

WHAT DOES/DOESN’T THE QUEEN LIKE?

Take these magic baskets where you can find the secret statements. They are about things which the Queen likes or doesn’t like. Divide them from your points of views. The first team is ready to guess the things that the Queen like, the rest – the things that the Queen doesn’t like.

GAME XII

QUEEN’S TRAVELLING CROSSWORD

Now I am going to present you the crossword. In the crossword you should find nine words about things which the Queen takes with her traveling round the world.

I should tell you that our meeting is coming to an end. You worked very hard. In fact you are the masters of traditions, aren’t you? Before we say “good-bye” to each other let’s listen to our jury.

The jury member: You see, I'm holding several stockings in my hand. Some of you may think I'm cold and I'm going to put them on. But you're mistaken. Does anybody know what they are meant for at Christmas? Yes, they are for Christmas presents. Children in Britain put their stockings by the side of the chimney for Father Christmas or Santa Claus to put their presents in. Now, let's peep into our stockings. Will you do it and see if there is a present for you?

My best congratulations to the winner, but don’t upset as friendship is the best winner to my mind. Do you agree? Thank you very much for your work. We all wish you good luck and Merry Christmas!
