Objectives:

- to practise communicative skills;

- to practise using words related to "Mass Media";

- to practise using Reported Speech;

- to practise listening for the main idea;

- to check and consolidate grammar and vocabulary studied in this module;

- to practise reading skills.

Stages:

I. Introduction.

Teacher: Good morning, pupils! Nice to meet you. I believe all of you are in good shape today to work hard. The topic of our lesson today is "Mass Media. Television". We'll have a talk about TV and it's role in the life of people.

II. Phonetic activities.

Teacher: I want you to look at the screen. You can see words which are connected with our topic today. Can you match the words with their definitions. (on the screen)

Task 1: Try to find the correct definition to these words.

1. a serial a) to show on TV
2. to broadcast b) people who watch TV
3. an advertising c) a film consisting of several or many parts
4. viewers d) to march the two different parts
5. to connect e) a short clip telling up about advantage of things

Teacher: Good. Now pupils, be active and try to remember as many English words on the topic "Mass Media" as you can.

Task 2. Find a rhyme.

balloon (cartoon), canal (channel), vote (devote), cat (chat), sandal (scandal), sweet (broadsheet), specialize (realize), port (report), paper (newspaper).

III. Warm-up activities.

Teacher: Answer my questions, please. How do you get information about the world?

Pupils: There are a lot of different ways of getting new information. I think the main source of information for millions people is mass media. It includes newspapers and magazines, advertising and radio, and of course, television.

Teacher: What do you think is the best way of getting information?

P2: It's a difficult question. Perhaps, the best way to learn about everything is watching TV because there are many various programmes that keep you informed about the rest of the world.

Teacher: Do you like reading newspapers?

P3: No, I don't. They usually have long boring articles. But I prefer reading magazines. They are more interesting.

Teacher: What magazines do you like to read?

P3. As for me, I am keen on computer and computer games. That's why I like to read such magazines as "Chip" and "Game". They are packed with the latest information about computers and computer games.

Teacher: What about you, P4?

P4: In my opinion, the most popular way of learning about the world is TV, because it is a reflection of the modern world. Besides television gives you an opportunity to travel all over the world, to see different people and to learn about their customs and traditions.

Teacher: Do you like watching TV, P5?

P5: Yes, I do. I like watching TV very much.

Teacher: There are many channels on Russian television. What kind of programmes do they offer?

P6: TV channels show a great variety of programmes: documentaries and current affairs programmes, feature films and comedies, soap and police series, concerts and talk shows.

Teacher:... and of course commercials. What do you think of advertising on TV?

P7: They irritate me. When I sit down to watch the film, suddenly it stops. I find it really annoying.

P8: As for me, I don't take advertising seriously. Some of them are funny.

IV. Checking the homework.

Teacher: Your home task was to make up a story about your favourite programme. It's interesting to find out your TV viewing habits. P, will you tell us about your favourite programme? Pupils, ask P questions.

P1: What is your favourite programme?

P: I enjoy watching different quizzes. That's why my favourite TV programme is "Who wants to be a Millionaire?"

P2: What channel is it broadcast on?

P: It is transmitted on the First channel.

P3: Who is the host of the programme?

P: Well, the programme is now hosted by Dmitry Dibrov.

P4: What time is it broadcast at?

P: It is shown once a week in the afternoon and lasts about an hour.

P5: What is this programme about?

P: First of all, it is a game where the player is asked different questions. If the answers are correct, the participant gets a lot of money. But if he is wrong, he loses everything.

P6: Why do you like this programme?

P: I enjoy watching this programme because the questions are always very interesting and they help me to expand my outlook. Besides, it's the perfect way to be in the know of everything. I find this programme clever and informative and try not to miss it.

V. Language usage (Grammar and Vocabulary)

Teacher: There are many informative programmes on TV. One of them is "News". A lot of people like TV news because they can see everything with their own eyes at any time of day or night. But do you know how people got news in the past? The text "The News on TV" can help you. As you read, use the words given in capitals at the end of each line to form a word that fits one space. [1]

VI. Listening for the main idea (Basic level)

Teacher: It's impossible to imagine our life without TV nowadays. Do you want to know what the British think about television? You will hear 6 people talking about their attitude to TV. Match each speaker with one of the statements from the list A-G which conveys each speaker's attitude. Use each letter only once. There is one extra statement which you don't need to use. You will hear the recording twice. [2]

VII. Grammar activities. Reported Speech.

Teacher: You have learnt that many Russian and British people like watching TV. My friend called Natalie likes travelling. She has already been to many countries. Last year she was in the USA. Look at the screen. Here you can see some fragments of our conversation connected with television. Report them.

"Oh, yes. On average, American viewers watch TV about six hours a day, usually tuned to one of the national commercial networks".

VIII. Reading Comprehension (Gapped text)

Teacher: It's not a secret that TV has both good and bad points. What are they? You will read the text; four statements have been removed from it. Choose from the statements A-E the one which fits each gap. There is one extra sentence which you don't need to use.[3]

IX. The explanation of the homework.

Teacher: The home task for you is to write a composition. Comment on the following statement. [4]

"Television is considered to have great educational power. However, some people think that watching TV is a waste of time."

What can you say for and against television? Write 200-250 words.

Use the following plan:

- make an introduction (state the problem)

- give arguments "for"

- give arguments "against"

- draw a conclusion based on the given arguments.

X. The conclusion of the lesson.
