Hello, dear boys and girls!

As you know English people often begin talking about the weather when they meet. So do the Russians. But why? Yes, you are right. It is because the weather is changeable both in Great Britain and in our place as well. So, how’s the weather today? Is it frosty? Do you like it?

And what would you say having the weather like this? I have prepared some pictures for you. Remember the dialogues and act them out.

  • What’s the weather like today? Is it sunny?
It sure is. Dry and warm with just a light breeze.
  • Does it look like rain?
    It certainly does.
  • It’s a nice day today, isn’t it?
It certainly is. Not a cloud in the sky, but 30 degrees above zero is too hot, much too hot.
Oh, yes. It’s hot and humid.
Is it usual summer weather in Saint-Petersburg?
Oh, no. But it depends, you know.
  • It’s cold outside. It’s bitter cold.
    Is it going to rain?
I’m not sure but I hope so. The weather will be milder then.
  • Is it going to rain?
I hope not, though it looks like rain. There are many dark clouds in the sky and a cold wind is blowing.
Well done! I liked your dialogues.

I am sure, you know that there is a Queen in the UK and we have read some information about the Houses of Parliament. So, the question is: Do you know who rules Britain?

At today’s lesson we shall find the answer.

But now, let’s see how well you have done your homework (ex.11, p.176)

II.

Let’s play a little. As you are all clever, so the students in the first row will be “Bright” and in the second one you will be “Smart”.

Task1) Listen to the sentences and agree with the idea:

“B” – They speak English well.
“S” – We like to sing songs in English.
“B”– Tom was in the Republic of Ireland.
“S’ – Mary was lucky to visit Great Britain.
“B – Her friend lives in Edinburg.
“S” – She usually spends her holidays in Wales.
“B” – They visited Cardiff last year.
“S” – My cousins lived in Belfast two years ago.

Task2) Group together in your team and complete sentences with the proper verb:

1. The UK is an island state.
So … the Republic of Ireland.

2. The Scots speak not only English but their own language as well.
So … the Welsh.

3. India belonged to the British Empire.
So … Pakistan.

4. I want to visit the UK.
So … we.

Now, let’s see your score. It is on the blackboard.

So, the score of the team “Bright” is… Well done!

“Smart”, you’ve got… You are really smart!

You know that English people like drinking tea. So do I.

What about you?

As for me, I drink tea and have a piece of toast with jam.

What else can we spread on toast or bread?

What does the King like to have on his slice of bread?

Boys, our girls have prepared a surprise for you. They will dramatize the poem “The King’s bread and butter” by A.A. Milne for you.

And now, you, boys, recite the poem, please!

I liked your reciting. Thank you.

You all have excellent marks for your work.

When you did the second task in the competition, you came across the name of the country– Pakistan. It is a new word for you, so I helped you to pronounce it correctly. Now, open your vocabularies and write down the words from the blackboard. We shall need them soon.

Pakistan
Ceylon
the Commonwealth
the House of Lords
the House of Commons
a tax – taxes

It’s time to move a little bit.

Up, down! Up, down!
Which is the way
To London Town?
Where? Where?
Up in the air,
Close your eyes –
And you are there!

Where are you? (The pupils name different places of interest in London).

Listen! We hear the striking of Big Ben. Where are we?

The Houses of Parliament…

The Queen…

Who rules the UK then?

Let’s find it out. Open your textbooks, we shall read the text “The Queen and the Parliament”.

It is rather difficult to understand the British way of ruling the country. In Britain the Queen is the Head of State, but in fact she doesn’t rule the country as she has no power.

The Queen is a symbol of the country history and its traditions. She is very rich. She travels about the United Kingdom, meets different people and visits schools, hospitals and other special places. So do all the members of the Royal family: the Queen’s husband, her son Prince Charles, the Queen’s daughters: Princess Anna and Princess Margaret.

At the beginning of the century many countries all over the world were ruled by Britain. All of them were included into the British Empire and were its colonies. India, Pakistan, Ceylon, for example, were among them. Now these countries are independent states. But in 1949 Britain and the former colonies founded the Commonwealth. The Commonwealth includes many countries such as Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and others.

The Queen of Great Britain is also the Head of Commonwealth and the queen of Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

The real power in the country belongs to the British Parliament and to the British Government. The British Parliament has two “houses”: the House of Lords and the House of Commons.

The House of Lords doesn’t have much power but it is very important as it can offer and change laws, it can delay laws too.

The House of Commons makes laws about the policy of the country, taxes and many other things.

So, I suppose, now you know who rules Britain.

Let’s answer some questions from the text.

  1. Who is the Head of State in Britain?
  2. Does the Queen rule the country?
  3. What does the Queen do?
  4. What do you know about the Royal family?
  5. What countries were included into the British Empire at the beginning of the century?
  6. What happened in 1949?
  7. Who does the real power in Britain belong to?
  8. What do you know about the British Parliament?
  9. Why is the House of Lords very important?
  10. How often do the British people elect members of the House of Commons?
    Well done!

What haven’t you known at beginning the lesson?

Do you know now if the Queen rules the country?

Who does the real power belong to?

Tomorrow I’d like you to tell me everything that you’ve known at the lesson today.

Write down your homework…

You have worked very well, your marks are …

Thank you for your work. See you tomorrow.
