3. Основной этап.

I want you to go on a short imaginary excursion around our home town.

Учащиеся проводят экскурсию.

First of all we’d like you listen to brief historical information about it.

Слайд 1. Our home town Ulyanovsk is situated on the banks of the Volga, the largest river in Europe, 800 kilometres south-east of Moscow. Слайд 2.The town was founded in 1648 as a fortress to protect the Moscovite State from Nomadic tribes and was called Simbirsk then. There are several explanations for this name. Some explorers say it comes from the Chuvash word meaning <<green mountains>> or to the name of the Bulgarin Prince Sinbir. Слайд 3. For many years Simbirsk was a small provincial town with quiet little streets, wooden houses and overgrown gardens. There were many churches and monasteries, but no factories and plants. . In May 1924 the town was renamed Ulyanovsk in honour of V.I.Lenin who was born and spent the first 17 years of his life here.

Слайд 4. Today Ulyanovsk is one of the largest industrial and cultural centres of the Volga region with the population of about 700 thousand people. It consists of 4 administrative districts: Leninsky, Zheleznodorozhny, Zavolzhsky and Zasviyazhsky connected by tram, bus and trolley-bus links. Слайд5. We live in Zasviyazhye which is situated in the western part of Ulaynovsk. Слайд 6. This is the main industrial district of our town. The largest industrial enterprise is the Ulyanivsk automobile plant producing the famous jeeps UAZ which have become a kind of a visiting card of Ulyanovsk. Besides there are some other large factories and plants. Слайд 7-8. Our Zasviyazhsky district is nice, especially its distant parts. Quite recently there were only fields and meadows and today there are broad avenus and streets with tall buildings, modern schools and kindergartens, such as Promyshlennaya Street, Zhigulovskaya Street, Kamyshinskaya Street, Otradnaya Street and Ryabikov Street where our gymnasium is situated.

Слайд 9. Now let’s go to the central part of our town. On its highest and most beautiful place Venets there is Lenin’s Birth Centenary Square, which appeared in 1970. The main building here is the majestic Lenin Memorial. Слайд10. Opposite the Memorial there is the building of the State Pedagogical University. The ensemble of the Square also includes the tallest and the most comfortable hotel of our town – Venets.

Слайд 11. And now look at the centre of the political life of Ulyanovsk. This is Lenin Square where the monument to V.I.Lenin 15 metres high stands. Here you can also see the building of the Regional administration.

Слайд 12. One more square of our town is also worth seeing. It’s the Square of the 30th Anniversary of the Victory Day at the intersection of Minayev and Goncharov streets. On May 9, 1975 there was opened the Glory Obelisk with an Eternal Flame in front in honour of the victory in the Great Patriotic War.

Слайд 13. One of the best museums of our town is Lenin's House Museum which is situated at 68, Lenin Street (former Moskovskaya Street). The decor and atmosphere of every room in this house tells us about a friendly united family. The Ulyanovs were living there from 1878 up to their leaving Simbirsk in 1887.There are many places associated with Lenin in Ulyanovsk, but the building which housed the former Simbirsk men's classical education school attracts special attention. The Ulyanov's brothers-Alexander, Vladimir and Dmitry studied there. A Memorial Museum has been opened in the classroom where Vladimir studied.

Слайд 14. One of the main sights of our town is the monument to the famous writer and historian N.M.Karamzin which was set up in 1845.

The monument is surrounded by Karamzin Public Garden, one of the most favourite rest places of the inhabitants of Ulyanovsk.

Слайд 15. Among the citizens of our town of different times there were Decembrits Vasily Ivashev and Nikolay Turgenev, critics Pavel Annenkov and Dmitry Grigorovich, poets Dmitry Minayev, Nikolay Yazykov and Ivan Dmitriev, writers Sergei Aksakov, Nikolay Karamzin and others. The prominent writer Ivan Goncharov was also born in our town. It was here that he wrote his novels ‘Oblomov’ and ‘The Precipice’. The writer used to say that Simbirsk, its inhabitants and the natural beauty of the Volga region were a source of inspiration for him. We remember Ivan Alexandrovich Goncharov. One of the main streets of our town was given the writer’s name. The memorial plaque affixed to the wall of the house where Goncharov was born and lived for many years reads: ‘Ivan Alexandrovich Goncharov was born here on June, 6, 1812 ‘.Today the building houses the museum, the only one in Russia, devoted to the life and work of this great Russian writer. We also have the Goncharov Arbour where the conception of the novel ‘The Precipice’ appeared and the monument to Goncharov in one of the squares.

Слайд 16. Besides, in the centre of Ulyanovsk at 3, Novy Venets Boulevard there is the Goncharov Memorial House, built in connection with the Goncharov Centenary. Now it houses 2 museums. Every person visiting Ulyanovsk will certainly visit these two museums. On the first floor there is the Museum Of Local Lore. It was organized in 1895. The museums has several sections showing our region’s history from the first human settlements to the present day. Documents, photographs, weapons, maps and archeological artefacts tell us of the founding of Simbirsk, of the peasant wars led by Stepan Razin and Emelyan Pugachev, of the participation of the people of Simbirsk in the Patriotic War of 1812, in the revolution of 1905 and 1917, in Civil War. A special section is devoted to the flora and fauna of the Ulyanovsk region. Here you may see paleontological, archeological, numismatic and ethnographic collections.

Слайд 17. On the second floor the Ulyanovsk Art Museum is located. It was opened in 1920 and now it has rather a rich collection of paintings of Russian and foreign painters, such as Shishkin, Bryullow, Rokotov, Polenov, Repin, Levitan, Tristan, Sporel and others. Слайд 18. The pride of the Museum is the works of a famous painter of the Ulyanovsk region, the academician and winner of Lenin and State prizes Arkady Plastov. For many years Plastov lived and worked in the village of Prislonikha, not far from Ulyanovsk. Слайд 19. The museum has more than 20 of his pictures, for example ‘The Holiday’, ‘Camp-fire in Field’ and ‘The village in March’.

Слайд 20.Not far from the Goncharov Memorial House there is one more famous building. It’s the former noblemen’s assembly building. In 1848 one of the 1st public libraries in Russia was opened there, and many famous writers and public figures contributed many books to the collection. At present the building houses the Regional Palace of books, one of the largest libraries in the Volga region.

One of the 1st theatres in Russia was also opened in our town. Today’s Regional Drama Theatre performs both classical and modern plays and is very popular with the inhabitants of our town.

Слайд 21. Nowadays in Ulyanovsk there are a lot of wide three-lined streets and modern buildings of original architecture. For example, Minayev Street, the main road to the centre of Ulyanovsk; the House of Technology; the building of Ulyanovsk Department of Central B00ank of Russia, the House of Soviets, the Central Department Store and many others.

Слайд 22. At the same time our town is famous for its old impressive buildings, such as the Shatrov residence housing Wedding Palace now; Yazykov's former House where Literary Museum is located now, Zelenkova's former House where publishing houses of some local newspapers are situated at present and some others. Some quiet cosy streets and little old houses are also carefully preserved.
