I. Warm-up exercises

In the picture we can see a boy who looks quite upset. He has got a schoolbag, that’s why we can suppose he is coming from school. There can be several reasons why he is so sad.
Firstly, he may have quarreled with his best friends and he doesn’t know what to do.
He may be bullied by his classmates or someone who is older than him and he can’t find the way out.
And finally, we think he must have got a bad grade at school and now he’s afraid to go home because his parents will tell him off or even punish him.

In the picture we can see a group of girls, one of them is definitely bullied by the others.  We see that they are talking about the girl in a white t-shirt. We suppose they are telling some nasty things about her and maybe about her appearance, the way she speaks or what not! Of course, the girl feels the black sheep in their company.

In the picture we see two girls. One of them is crying. We guess she may have split up with her boyfriend because she saw him with another girl. She thinks the world has come to an end. She is crying.  The friend of hers is trying to cheer her up but in vain.

What are the  ways of coping with school stress?

Lightening the load
Eating regular meals
Doing exercise
Keep things in perspective
Talk with a loved one.
Getting enough sleep, etc.

One of the ways of coping with stress is to lighten the load. It means if you have too many things to do, you should try to break down into smaller chunks and deal with one thing at a time. In order of priority. You can give up an after-school activity for a while and concentrate on one activity- preparing for the exams.
Nutritious meals and adequate exercise are stress- busters!  Getting enough sleep, exercising and eating regular meals are all essential for coping with stress!
A talk with a loved one helps to relieve stress and keep things in perspective и т.д.

IV. Listening and speaking

Louise’s Story”.

Actually, Louise studied quite well. But she had to do a lot of work every day. In fact, the amount of work was so huge that she didn’t manage to do everything in time .So, she got stressed.
We agree that Louise got stressed because of her work at school. Her grades started to drop more and more. She tried to speak to her parents and ask them to help her to solve the problems but in vain. Her parents didn’t understand her. She didn’t know what to do.

Considering all Louise’s problems, we’ve come to the conclusion she can take action in order to control it . First of all, she should break tasks down into smaller chunks and deal with one thing at a time in order of priority. She has taken on too much. She also can keep things in perspective and shouldn’t be so dramatic! Saying “I’m   pulling my hair out or workload is killing me” will only make her feel worse.

We absolutely agree with the previous speakers, Louise should find ways to handle her stress. For a start, doing something relaxing, such as going for a walk or for a coffee with a friend, will take off the things that are bugging her. Writing poetry or keeping a diary will help her to deal with her negative emotions. Getting enough sleep is also essential for coping with stress.

V.  Speaking-Sympathising and encouraging

1)  A friend of yours is stressing out because of strained pressure from his classmates.

Hello, Masha. Are you all right? You look a bit worried!
 My classmates stress me out!
 How so?
They are always trying me to make me miss lessons but I don’t want to.
Oh! I know what you mean. But what do you do to deal with stress.
Not much. I try to relax by listening to music or surfing the net.  But I understand      that it’s a temporary solution.
I’m sorry to hear that. But I think you should learn to say ‘No” to your so-called friends. If it doesn’t help, you had better talk to your teacher. She‘ll help you find the way out! Cheer up! Everything   will be all right!
Thank you very much! Let’s hope for the best!

2)  You are under your parents’ pressure because of your grades.

You don’t look very happy.  What’s the matter?
Probably my parents stress me out the most.
 How so?
Well, they want good grades every day.
You have to deal with a lot of pressure from your parents.
Your parents are not like that, are they?
Ever since I brought home some bad grades in elementary school, they never expected much.
 You're lucky.
What do you do to deal with the stress?
Not much I can do. It's always there. I sometimes go out with some friends, listen to music but that's  only a temporary solution. The stress always returns in the morning.
I’m sorry to hear that, but I’m sure everything will be all right.
 Let’s hope for the best!
