ХОД УРОКА

1. Introducing the topic.

T – Good morning, boys and girls! I am sure you feel a bit excited today as our lesson is a bit unusual. I believe you want to know the topic we are going to discuss. Well, look at the pictures and tell what you think they illustrate.

Слайд 1.

(ученики называют тему урока Volunteering)

T – That’s right. Before the lesson I questioned you about voluntary work. You have answered the following questions: What is volunteering? Who can do voluntary work? Would you like to be a volunteer? Why? Why not? What would you like to do? Now you can see the results. Let’s comment upon them.

Слайд 2.

(ученики комментируют результаты анкетирования, используя следующие выражения: – Most of the students think that volunteering is … – Most of the students believe that voluntary work can be done by … – Most of the students would like to be a volunteer. And they would like to …)

T – And there is one more question to answer. Have you ever volunteered?

Слайд 3.

Well, as we see, many of you would like to join voluntary movement. That’s why our today’s lesson seems very topical.

2. Learning new vocabulary on the topic “Volunteering”

T – First let’s define the term volunteering. Please, read the definition.

Слайд 4.

(ученики читают определение понятия волонтерство: We define volunteering as any activity that involves spending time, unpaid, doing something that aims to benefit the environment or someone (individuals or groups) other than, or in addition to, close relatives. Central to this definition is the fact that volunteering must be a choice freely made by each individual. This can include formal activity undertaken through public, private and voluntary organisations as well as informal community participation.)

T – Well, what are the key words in this definition?

Слайд 5.

(ученики называют ключевые слова определения: volunteering, activity, unpaid, to benefit the environment or someone, a choice freely made, public, private and voluntary organisations, informal community participation)

T – So during our today’s lesson we’ll try to prove this definition. To begin with let’s learn what work can be voluntary. The following vocabulary will help you. Read the collocations, please.

Слайд 6.

(ученики читают и переводят словосочетания)

T – Now use these phrases to make up sentences to describe the pictures. Use the Present Continuous.

Слайд 6-12

(ученики описывают картинки – In the picture the volunteers are helping the disabled etc. )

3. Reading practice

T – Well done. Now open your textbooks to page 90. There is a text. Read its title.

(Lending a helping hand.)

Слайд 13

T – Now read the first and the last sentences of the text. Look at the picture. What do you think this text is about?

(The text is about voluntary work at an animal shelter.)

T – Did the person have a positive or a negative experience of volunteering? Why?

(Positive. He learnt a lot and met interesting people).

T – Now listen to the text and follow it in your textbook. Then match the paragraphs of text with the titles given in exercise 3.

(Paragraph 1 – c) Reasons why; Paragraph 2 – e) Odd jobs; Paragraph 3 – d) All shapes and sizes; Paragraph 4 – a) Special needs; Paragraph 5 – f) It all helps)

T – Great. To speak about the volunteering we need the following verbs: volunteer, support, donate, encourage, get involved. Let’s practice using these verbs in sentences given in exercise 6.

Слайд 14.

(1. My family donates old clothes and books to the local charity shop.
2. I volunteer once a week at a children hospital.
3. Many people support charities by giving money to them regularly
4. The fact that so many of Paul’s friends came to see him in hospital after the accident really encouraged him.
5. She liked the idea of getting involved with the local animal shelter and their campaign.)

T – Well, now imagine that you are Richard. Use the information from the text to persuade your partner to join you in the shelter as in the example in exercise 7.

(ученики дают причины занятий волонтерством, например: You can volunteer as often as you can)

4. Listening practice

T – As you see there are a lot of merits in volunteering. It’s great to help animals in need. But what about helping people? We’ll listen to the text now. It’s an interview with Sophia Georgi about Make-a-Wish foundation.

Слайд 15. Listen to it carefully and choose the correct answer a, b, c, or d. Study the questions. I give you 2 minutes.

T – Let’s start.

(ученики выполняют тест с множественном выбором на основе услышанного)

T – You managed it. But now we are going tointerview Sophia ourselves. Let’s ask her questions using the following prompts.

Слайд 16

(ученики составляют вопросы, используя предложенную лексику What is Make-A-Wish?
When did it start? What does the organization do? How did you know about Make-A-Wish?
How did you become a volunteer? Do you enjoy volunteering?)

T – Now let’s interview Sophia. Regina will act as Sophia and answer our questions.

(одна из учениц играет роль Софии и отвечает на вопросы одноклассников)

T – When I learned about Make-A-Wish organization, I decided to surf the Net for further information. Here is what I have found in Wikipedia. Read and tell what new information we can learn.Слайд 17

(ученики знакомятся с информацией, сообщают, что нового они узнали об организации)

T – And of course Make-A-Wish organization has its website. Look. What do you see? What do you want me to click?

(ученики знакомятся с сайтом организации)

5. Speaking practice

T – I hope you got interested in the idea of volunteering. That’s why let’s think of a volunteer organization we can found in this town. What do you think we can do to help our town?
Share your ideas in groups of four. Follow the guideline.

Слайд 18

(ученики планируют волонтерскую работу в родном городе и представляют свои высказывания по следующему плану:

– What kind of volunteering would you like to do? Why?
– When and how often would you like to volunteer?
– What kind of jobs would you like to do?
– Why should your friends join you?)

6. Evaluation

T – I see you are inspired by the idea of volunteering. You have great ideas. And I wish these ideas came true. And to encourage you I can give you some websites to support you in joining the volunteer movement. This is your homework as well. Thank you for working so hard and being so enthusiastic about volunteering.
