Ход урока

1. Организационный момент

T: Good morning, dear pupils and guests. Let’s start our lesson.

2. Введение темы

T: Today we should solve some problems about schools. Tell me, what problems you deal with at school.

Примерные ответы:

P1: We worry about our exams and want to pass them successfully.

P2: Today teachers give us a lot of homework and we haven’t free time.

P3: There are a lot of types of schools now and it’s difficult to choose the best school.

P4: Wearing a school uniform is one of the important problems.

P5: Students have problems in relationships between classmates, teachers.

T: Yes, I agree with you that teenagers have a lot of problems today. But we can’t solve all of them. So I suggest talking about only one of the most important problem. You can ask: “What problem is it?” I think you will guess if you listen to the conversation of two girls (видеозапись диалога двух девочек, обсуждающих школьную форму)

Диалог:

- Hi, ____. I haven’t seen you for ages.

Hello, ____. Nice to meet you.

Oh, what are you doing here?

I have moved to your town and I study at your school now.

What is your impression about my school?

It’s great. I think it’s big, comfortable and light. I really like it.

Have you made any friends?

Oh, yes. I’ve got to know all my classmates. They are friendly and help me to get used to everything around me.

But, I see you look a little sad. What happened? And why don’t you wear a school uniform?

Oh, it’s a problem for me. In my former school we didn’t wear a school uniform. I think it’s not necessary.

Maybe you are right. But the rules are strict in our school. And if you want to study here, you should follow them.

Yes, I understand but it’s really difficult for me. Anyway, thanks for your advice. Let’s see later.

Of course, good buy.

T: Well, what problem were these girls discussing?

P1: They were talking about school uniforms.

T: Yes, you are right. Today we should solve the problem: “school uniforms: to be or not to be?”

3. Проверка домашнего задания (сообщение об истории школьной формы в России)

T: But at first, let’s know some information about the history of school uniforms in Russia. Nastya, Al’bina and Gerda have prepared a report about this question.

Доклад (Приложение 2):

Let us start with the term “a school uniform” A uniform is a set of standard clothing, worn by members of an organization. Modern uniforms are worn by armed forces, policy, emergency services and, of course, by schools.

In Russia the school uniform was appeared in 1834. This uniform should have been worn by boys only. In 1896 it was appeared a uniform for girls.

The uniform of a grammar-school boy was the subject of the pride. It consisted of a cap, a high-collared tunic, a greatcoat and, of course, a satchel.

Girls should have worn dark dresses.

In 1949 it was introduced a compulsory school uniform. Boys wore grey tunics; girls wore dark brown dresses with black or white aprons. At that time the symbols of youth were introduced: pioneers wore red ties, octobrians and members of Komsomol wore special badges.

From 1973 till 1987 school uniforms had some changes. But in 1988 schools were allowed to decline uniforms. In 1992 school uniforms were repealed so pupils could wear everything what they wanted and liked. But nowadays we’ve returned to uniforms again. There are a lot of kinds and styles of uniforms now.

4. Аудирование

Тренировочные упражнения перед аудированием

T: Thanks a lot for your report, now we know about the history of a school uniform in Russia. But what about American and British schoolchildren? Do they wear school uniforms or not?

Ps: I think they wear/ don’t wear school uniforms.

T: well, some of them wear school uniforms, some don’t wear. So they have the same problem. And we are going to listen to four people from Britain, talking about wearing school uniforms. Before listening, we’ll do some exercises, which will help you. You have a sheet of paper with these exercises, write down your name.

Ex.1

As you remember, you will listen to four people. Try to predict which of speakers A-D will be for, which will be against wearing school uniforms.

A: teenage girl of 17

B: teenage boy of 14

C: a student’s mother

D: a young teacher

Ex.2

Here you can see some arguments, which belong to four speakers. Which of arguments are for, and which are against wearing school uniforms?

School uniforms are expensive.

If everybody wears uniforms, it’s cheaper – students can’t show off their trendy clothes.

Uniforms are less comfortable than students’ own clothes.

Wearing compulsory uniforms limits students’ freedom.

There’s more equality if everybody wears the same clothes.

T: thanks for your answers. And it’s time to check all your predictions. Let’s listen (2 раза).

T: now change your papers and check the answers.

5. Физминутка

6. Формирование навыков говорения

T: let’s return to our class and I’d like to know your opinion about wearing school uniforms. Are you against or in favour of uniforms?

Примерные ответы учеников:

P1: I think when we wear a uniform, we lose our individuality. So I am against wearing school uniforms.

P2: when we wear a uniform, we don’t have to think about what to put on. So in my point of view, school uniforms have the right to exist.

P3: Lots of pupils are often teased because they don’t wear expensive designer clothes to school. So those students whose parents can’t afford stylish clothes will feel more comfortable.

P4: I am sure that many students hate the uniform style.

P5: I’m rather practical person. And I think uniforms can be handed down to other kids in the family if they don’t have enough money. Si I’m in favour of school uniforms.

P6: A school uniform is a face of a pupil. If pupils wear uniforms they look friendlier, tidier.

P7: I’m sure a compulsory uniform would help us develop more pride in our school.

P8: I think that students protest against dress code because they want to have more freedom. And I totally agree with this statement.

P9: I’m keen on sport. So I think skirts and formal pants are not good for doing sport or running around at lunchtime or breaks.

P10: I don’t like the idea of a school uniform because I can’t stand wearing the same clothes all the time.

P11: A school uniform doesn’t give us an opportunity to show that we have something more to you than just your clothes. So to my mind we should decline a school uniform.

P12: I have a right to express my individuality. So I’m against wearing school uniforms.

P13: in our school we have rather strict rules. And you get into trouble if you don’t wear uniforms. So I have to follow this rule.

P14: School uniforms are usually practical and comfortable to wear. So I’m convinced that it’s necessary to wear uniforms.

7. Защита проектов

T: Thanks for your answers. I see we have two groups in our class: the first group is in favour of uniforms, the second one is against. I suggest you to prove your opinion and choose three judges. They will make a decision on our question after your presentations. If you agree, our boys will play this role.

1) We are against wearing school uniforms.(Приложение 4)

Preparing for our presentation, we have conducted a school survey. The list of questions consisted of two ones:

“Are you for of against wearing a school uniform?”

“What clothes would you like to choose?”

We’ve asked about 80 teenagers at the age of 11-16. Let us summarize the results. The majority of students (about 94%) are against wearing school uniforms. Not many students (about 6%) think that the school uniform is necessary. As for the second question, it is common for girls and boys to choose jeans.

The most popular argument against uniforms is the following. Students say that school uniforms deprive themselves of an opportunity to express their individuality. Moreover, they say that it’s easy for them to study in comfortable and stylish clothes.

In addition, Convention on the rights of the child says:”Every child has the right to express his individuality.” So the school uniform restricts child’s freedom.

So, we can make a conclusion that school uniforms are not necessary.

2) We are for wearing school uniforms. (Приложение 5)

There is no doubt it is necessary to wear a school uniform.

At first, wearing a uniform, we feel sense of belonging to our school and we are proud of our school.

Secondly, the school uniform teaches us to be discipline pupils. We think about our studying, getting good marks. And we don’t worry about what to wear on a school day.

Thirdly, a school uniform is a part of dress code. When we grow up, we’ll have to work. So we’ll have to follow the rules of a company or an office. I know that one of the most important rules is to look fairly, to be clean and neat. It’s true that looking at a person, we can guess about his job. Let’s try guessing.

To sum up, school uniforms are important and necessary. Wearing a uniform we prepare for our future life. We study to be disciplined and follow rules.

T: Thanks for your great work. We have listened to your opinion. Now it’s time to give the word for our judges.

Judges: we should answer the question: “Is a school uniform necessary?” We’ve listened to your arguments. Some of them are against; some are in favour of this point. And we came to the conclusion. We think that a school uniform has the right to exist. But modern kinds of uniforms are not suitable for our students. So we need to design a new type of a uniform.

8. Домашнее задание

T: well, we accept your decision. So your homework will be to prepare a fashion show. You can work in groups. Imagine a new type of a school uniform. Remember that the clothes should be fashionable. Prepare a picture to present your ideas.

9. Подведение итогов, выставление оценок.

T: Well done, my dear pupils. The lesson is over, good bye.
