Цели урока:

  1. Совершенствование речемыслительной деятельности учащихся через различные формы работы с текстом.
  2. Определение познавательно-коммуникативных задач в процессе чтения.
  3. Формирование “стратегии понимания” и умений ориентироваться в логико-смысловой структуре текста.

Развивающие цели урока:

  1. Развивать языковую догадку и речевую наблюдательность
  2. Развивать умения высказывать собственное мнение, делать выводы и анализировать полученную информацию
  3. Совершенствовать умственную деятельность учащихся через анализ и умения сравнивать и делать выводы.
  4. Развивать умения понимать содержание иноязычного текста, извлекать необходимую информацию.
  5. Развивать умения сворачивать информацию в схемы и пользоваться таблицами при чтении информации.

Познавательные цели урока:

  1. Обогатить учащихся знаниями культурологического характера
  2. Формировать прочные знания лексического и грамматического материала по теме.
  3. Обогатить словарный запас учащихся с первичной автоматизацией лексических единиц.

Ход урока

1. Введение учащихся в ход урока.

The world of books is enormous. Many people are fond of reading and their interests are different. One can enjoy reading romantic novels but another one thinks it is boring. So it is rather difficult to give some advice on reading.

And though nowadays we get information in the other ways as well, many people prefer reading a book as in old good time.

4. Texts for reading can be different as well as the aims the texts are read for…Imagine that you are in Britain and you want to learn a bit more about its history and culture. Look through the texts. Match the right telephone number and the information about an exhibition or a tour which you want to go to. Be attentive as there is one extra text.

5. If we want to know any foreign language better, we have to read books in this language as much as possible. In this case we are usually recommended to read a book based on our interests. You have samples of the books written in English. Match the titles of the books with the descriptive bits and tell which book you would prefer to read and why.

6. Millions of books are published every year around the world. According to John Ruskin, a British writer, “All books are divisible into two classes: the book of hour and the book of all time”. Which book is “the book of all time”, in your opinion; the book you can recommend to your peer from another country to read to learn more about Russian literature?

“MASTER and MARGARITA”

Mystery is not the main thing,

Try to find the same inside yourself.

I would like to represent the most fascinating, enjoyable, witty and exciting book, which makes me be in sympathy with its ideas, help to realize the things I’ve never noticed before—“Master and Margarita” by M. Bulgakov. I know somebody of you hates this book; somebody doesn’t understand it and think that it is a stupid horror story, mysterious detective or something of that kind. When I was reading this book for the first time, I certainly noticed some magic events like each of you, and followed the thread of outwards developments. But it was the first impression which can be usually wrong. My mother told me: “You’ll understand it later when you’re older”. And it’s really like this.

This book is full of events and characters, and each person is not ordinary, everyone is necessary. Bulgakov created the world existed and which was unreal at the same time. He showed the country which stopped being existed many years ago, the world of the 30s, the communist formation which turned people into the birds without wings. And one of the main characters—Voland—would like to clear out if the people had changed? But he already knew the answer…

The writer mixed up reality and fantasy. But nobody knows where one thing ends and the other begins.

The book fascinates you and you can’t stop reading. The main characters… I love them so much… They are not common. They differ from ordinary persons. That’s why the society exiles them and they are alone in this world. Nobody understands them. It’s difficult but they are able to overcome it. Master and Margarita went to another world and they won’t come back again but they are still alive, if you can draw a parallel.

You know, I can tell that this book is very humorous, too, and you can guess whom I’m speaking about. Of course, they are the Cat named Begemot; the interpreter Korovyev and Azazello. You’ll never meet them but it’s a collective image and one can find oneself in it. I really adore them so much!

And some words about Voland. He seems to be a just and equitable judge. You can conquer the evil only by using the evil forces to restore the justice. And I’d like to add some more words to finish—it seems that everything is clear in this book and the answer to all the questions is on the surface, but you never know what will happen to you next moment, so don’t judge the others, especially those people who are afraid of being lost in this world under different blows brought to them in a course of life. And don’t think you can control your own life.

Of course, you may agree or disagree with me, but it’s only my own opinion, you may have your own one.

“The Dog’s Heart”

It turned out that we also want to recommend you for reading another book by M. Bulgakov. Its title is “The Dog’s Heart”. The book is read with pleasure both by youngsters and grown-ups.

The main character of the novel is Professor Preobrazhensky whose fantastic scientific experiment managed to turn a dog Sharik by name into a human being. He inherited the dog’s name and became Sharikov. Sharikov tries to behave himself like a person, not a clever one to my mind.

Though the book tells us a story which is not true, there are a lot of episodes which are true-to-life moments about the first days of people’s life in a new socialist society.

The writer wanted to attract the readers’ attention to the facts which took place after the Revolution in the minds of common people, who all of a sudden believed that everything was possible without any changes in the people’s conscience.

The book is very interesting for those who like unusual things, but I’m sure that it is also interesting for those who are keen on the history of our country and who share the writer’s pain for the future of Russia.

British literature is very rich. You can always find a town, a city or a piece of country connected with a famous writer or a poet. All of us know the names of William Shakespeare, Charles Dickens and Sir Walter Scott.

The historic town of Stratford-upon-Avon is known as William Shakespeare’s birthplace. Each year it attracts the people from all over the world to come here to have a look at this place and to watch one of Shakespeare’s plays in the theatre just among the scenery the great playwright created his works.

The best place to begin a literary exploration of London is Westminster Abbey. Here you can find the Poets’ corner with the monuments and tombs of well-known writers.

Many famous writers made London their home. Some of their homes are open to the public. You can visit Charles Dickens’ house where he lived from 1837—1839. The houses where Oscar Wilde, George Eliot, Bernard Shaw and others lived are also museums now. Only in London will you have a chance to visit the fictitious addresses of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson whom we all know from the detective stories by Conan Doyle.

Wales has not only produced outstanding writers in the Welsh and English languages, it has inspired poets such as William Wordsworth and Dylan Thomas, too. Here not far from Cardiff, the modern children’s writer Roald Dahl was born.

In Wales you can see the White Rabbit Memorial which proclaimed that Wales inspired Lewis Carroll to write his literary treasure “Alice in Wonderland”.

Bath is a cultural centre which has attracted many novelists, poets and playwrights. Among them are the poets Alexander Pope, Wordsworth and Shelley, writers Tobias Smollett and Henry Fielding, the playwright Richard Sheridan.

Sir Walter Scott and Charles Dickens stayed here, Jane Austin, the author of “Pride and Prejudice” lived and worked in the city between 1800 and 1806.

Jerome K. Jerome was also born in Wales, in Walsall.

Cambridge and Oxford Universities have produced a great number of writers: Thomas Gray, Milton, Thackeray, Tolkien and many others.

In Scotland you will be told the story of Robert Burns, the great Scottish poet whose poetry has turned into many songs and become very popular.

So join our tour and enjoy our literature.

8. Our country is also proud of its literature and among the glorious names of well-known Russian writers and poets there is the name of one of the most outstanding poets of the XX th century who was described by Maxim Gorky as “A poet so pure and so Russian”. It is Sergey Yesenin, whose 100th birthday was marked in 1995.

Here are some facts from his biography. Do you think these facts will be interesting for your foreign pen-friend, who is fond of Russian literature and wants to know a bit more about it? Выводы о проделанной работе представлены в компьютерном варианте в виде таблиц и диаграмм двумя учениками, выбранными для обработки данных, полученных в ходе опроса. Учащиеся сопровождают свои результаты небольшим сообщением на английском языке.

11. Заключительный этап урока, выводы учащихся и учителя о проделанной работе и знаниях, полученных в ходе урока.

(Урок проводился в 11-м классе с учащимися, для которых английский язык является вторым иностранным языком после французского, учащиеся начали изучать английский язык в 7 классе)
