B.: What, that one?

A.: Yeah, the one that says “announcement” on it… and you need to actually hold it down… hold the button down…

B.: Okay…

A.: … and then in a second a light flashes, a red light… and that means it’s ready to record… and you just record your announcement: “I’m sorry I can’t take your call”… whatever.

Teacher:

- Look at these letters of one word: N, I, E, L, T, I, O, S, V, E. If you put them in the correct order you’ll get the word which means the most powerful and popular type of mass media, which is also one of the most wonderful inventions of the 20th century. What is it?

Отгадав слово Television, учащиеся просматривают в течение 1-2 минут отрывок из фильма “Гарри Поттер”. Это поможет им немного расслабиться и перейти к выполнению следующих заданий, в которых речь пойдёт именно о телевидении.

Teacher:

- Doing the first task of our contest you have learned the name of the inventor of television. Now I’d like you to read the text about him and you’ll learn how it happened.

Contest 3 “Meet the Great Inventor”

Read the text about a great inventor of the television John Logie Biard, ask questions and answer them.

John Logie Biard (1888 – 1946)

TELEVISION

The television is one of the great inventions to come out of Scotland. To all of us who enjoy relaxing in front of the television, we have a Scotsman to thank. John Logie Biard from Helensburgh (near Glasgow) invented this phenomenally successful communication device, with the first ever television broadcast being transmitted by the BBC in 1929. But the first success took place on 25th October 1925. The first person on television was a boy who worked in the office next to Biard’s workroom in London. On 27th January 1926 he demonstrated his invention before an audience of scientists at the Royal Institution in London. In addition, using infrared light, he was able to transmit pictures of people sitting in total darkness. He named it “Noctavision”. He moved his experiments to more spacious rooms in Motograph House, near Leicester Square and with two friends he formed “Television Ltd”. In 1927 Biard sent pictures from London to Glasgow. He was also experimenting with three spirals of holes, each covered with a red, blue, or green filter, and he demonstrated color television in Glasgow. He was also experimenting with, and demonstrating, stereoscopic television. In the same year, using a short-wave transmitter, he sent a television picture to the USA and to a ship, the “Berengaria” in mid-Atlantic. He launched “Biard International Television” with a capital of 1 million pounds to exploit television commercially.

Following a number of tests in 1928 the B.B.C. carried out its first experimental transmission in 1928. It was seen by about 30 people in the UK who had bought receivers from Biard International. At this time it was difficult to get vision and sound in phase, but this was achieved in 1930 when Gracie Fields, the synchronized transmission.

John Logie Biard was determined to achieve a fully electronic color television receiver. And he did. Using a two color (blue – green, orange – red) cathode ray system he demonstrated, on 16th August 1944, the television picture of his favorite tailor’s dummy, dressed in a pink jacket and blue trousers, to a group of journalists in his workshop in London.

Biard died in his sleep, aged 58, on 14th June 1946. He was buried in the little church-yard at Helensburgh, the place of his birth.
