ХОД УРОКА

All the great things are simple,
and many can be expressed in a single word:
freedom, justice, honour, duty, mercy, hope.
Winston Churchill .

We can do not great things-only small things with great love.
Mother Teresa.

1. Стадия вызова (Evocation)

Teacher. Dear boys and girls I'm very glad to see you. I hope you are fine. So let's begin our lesson. The subject of today's discussion is very important. Today we are going to talk about fight for peace and justice, about human rights and freedom. "We shall overcome" has become a key anthem of the US civil rights movement. (Приложение 2)

Who can be called a real hero? What qualities should you have to become a leader? What sacrifices will you have to make trying to change our society?

We learnt a lot about outstanding activists such as Mother Teresa, Andrey Sakharov and others. We summarized and analysed all the information and made a special scheme which is called a "cluster". It shows the ways of our thoughts. It is a structure of our thinking. Let's look at the screen.

What did they usually struggle for/against?

What qualities did they have?

What exactly did they do?

2. What positive and negative consequences of their activity can you name?(Приложение 3)

3. Our today's lesson is devoted to Martin Luther King- a famous civil rights activist who struggled for the rights of black people in the United States and became a national hero.

"Six thinking hats" method will help us to discuss the problem of heroism from different points of view. It is an important and powerful technique. It is used to look at decisions from a number of important perspectives.

The "Six thinking hats" are different ways of looking at an issue that has to be decided, each "Thinking Hat" is a different style of thinking.

The White Hat: calls for information, known or needed. "The facts, just the facts."
The Red Hat: signifies feelings, hunches and intuition - the place where emotions are placed without explanation
The Black Hat: signifies caution and critical thinking - do not overuse! Why something may not work
The Yellow Hat: symbolizes brightness and optimism. You can explore the positives and probe for value and benefit.
The Green Hat: focuses on creativity, possibilities, alternatives and new ideas. It is an opportunity to express new concepts and new perceptions - lateral thinking could be used here
The Blue Hat: is used to manage the thinking process. It ensures that the "Six Thinking Hats" guidelines are observed. Today this hat is mine.

4. Let's get down to the first task. Do you believe that:

The third Monday in January is a federal legal holiday commemorating Martin Luther King's birthday.

Time magazine chose him as Man of the year in 1963.

He wasn't an educated person.

He was named Michel but late his name was changed to Martin Luther

He was against the war in Vietnam

He was 35 years old when he won The Nobel Peace Prize in 1964-the youngest man to ever receive this high honour.

He didn't have any children.

The person who influenced him most was Nelson Mandela.

5. I have prepared a very interesting text for you. It contains a lot of facts from the biography of Martin Luther King so you should put on the white hat. Let's read the text and check your previous predictions.

6. Let's watch the video.

On 28 August 1963 Martin Luther King, Jr. organized a historic march to Washington to show the importance of solving the nation's racial problems. About 250,000 people gathered and listened to Martin Luther King's speech when he uttered the immortal words: "I have a dream that my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the colour of their skin, but by the content of their character".

7. Let's make a list of advantages and disadvantages of being of civil rights activist. Don't forget to put on the black and the yellow hat. Then we discuss our ideas and exchange the hats.

Possible answers:

advantages disadvantages
People are interested in your opinion. Some people hate and threaten you.
You fight for human rights and freedom. You are afraid for your relatives and supporters
You try to change society. You can be assassinated.
You struggle for justice and democracy.

You can travel all over the world.

You can be arrested or imprisoned.

Most activists even lost their lives.

People respect and admire you. Government doesn't approve you.
You try to change laws, make them better.

You receive different awards.

You can be deprived all your titles and awards.

You can be exiled to a faraway place.

You can help people. It is difficult to know who to trust.
You spend all your time on your activity. Your life is constantly in danger.
You give away some money to charities. You have a lot of enemies.

Your arguments are very convincing. I agree with both hats.

Let's return to our cluster and compare the biography of Martin Luther with our scheme.

9. Подведение итогов урока.

The topic of our today's conversation was very serious.

Martin Luther King, the man who has never abandoned his faith in the unarmed struggle, who has suffered for his faith, who has been imprisoned on many occasions, whose home has been subject to bomb attacks, whose life and the lives of his family have been threatened, and who nevertheless has never faltered.

What was his dream? That all people someday will be sisters and brothers in the world governed by equality, justice, and peace. I think that his cause will never be forgotten.

We have spoken much about this outstanding person and we have discussed the problem of being a hero (leader, activist) from different points of view. So let's hope that we'll try to do something really meaningful in our own lives.

May be one day we'll live in a wonderful world without wars, racism and injustice.

Let's listen to the song "What wonderful world" and let's hope that our dream one day will come true.

Your home task is to comment on the following quotations and give your reasons. You can see them on the screen.

All the great things are simple, and many can be expressed in a single word: freedom, justice, honour, duty, mercy, hope. Winston Churchill .

We can do not great things-only small things with great love. Mother Teresa.

I'd like to thank you for good work at the lesson. I give excellent marks to..., good - to :, etc. I wish you good luck.

The lesson is over. See you later. Good-bye!
