Ведущий: Dear friends, we glad to see you at our meeting. Today we are having an unusual meeting. We will visit different countries and know a lot of interesting things about them and how people in these countries celebrate Christmas and New Year. You have already known some facts about geography of our planet. So, could you answer my questions?

1. What is the name of the planet we live on?
2. How many oceans are there on our planet? What are they ? Can you show them on the map ?
3. How many continents are there? What are they? Show them on the map.
4. What separates the continents from each other?
5. What is the largest country in the world?
6. Name: 3 countries in Europe, 2 countries in Asia, 2 countries in America. What are their capitals? Find their national flags and say what their colors are?

Ученики отвечают на вопросы ведущего.

Ведущий: Nowadays English is the most popular language, isn’t it? (2)

P1: Yes, it is. People all over the world speak English. In Russia and France, in Germany and Italy, in Spain and Egypt people learn English as a foreign language. They say that English has become the international language of the 20th century.

Ведущий: Why is it important to know English?

P2: People will understand you practically everywhere if you speak English. In most of the countries people speak English and their native language of course.

Ведущий: In what countries do people use English as their native language?

P3: In Great Britain, the USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. These are English-speaking countries.

Ведущий: So in all these countries people speak the same language, don’t they?

P4: My answer is “yes” and “no”. Though they all speak English, yet it is a little different in each of these counties.

P5: You don’t say so! I never knew that Americans and the English speak different languages.

P6: Oh, no! They don’t. They speak English in both countries, but people speak American English in the USA and British English in Great Britain. Different words often name the same things.

Ведущий: What do you mean?

P6: I mean that people live in flats in England but they live in apartments in America. They eat cookies and candies in the USA, but biscuits and sweets in Great Britain. Children go to school in the fall in America but in autumn in England.

P7: That’s very interesting indeed.

Ведущий: Let’s play a game. Imagine that you are at an International confe- rence. Say what your name (nationality) is, where you are from and what language you speak.

Дети подходят к столу, на котором разложены рисунки национальных флагов разных стран обратной стороной, берут рисунки и выполняют задание (по образцу):

P1: My name is Van Lee. I’m from Vietnam. I ‘m Vietnamese. My language is Vietnamese.

P2: My name is Lorance. I’m from France. I’m French. My language is French. И т. д.

Ведущий: Soon we are going to celebrate Christmas and New Year’s Day. They are the special days for many people living in different parts of the world, but they don’t celebrate them in one and the same way. Let’s see how Christmas and New Year’s Day are celebrated in different countries.

P1: Santa Claus has become the most beloved of Christmas symbols and traditions. The image of the jolly elf flying in a sleigh pulled by reindeers and leaving toys and gifts for every child is known worldwide. But many countries have kept their own customs and traditions of Saint Nicholas. (1).

P2: In Holland Sintirklass sails in a ship.

P3: In Germany Saint Nicholas travels with an assistant Knecht Ruprecht.

P4: In Italy La Befana is a good witch who dresses all in black and bring gifts.

P5: In France Pere Noel brings gifts for the children.

P6: In Switzerland Christkindl (Christ Child) bear gifts.

P7: In Scandinavia the julinisse or the juletomte (an elf) brings presents.

P8: In England Father Christmas brings gifts.

P2: In Holland dutch children watch for St Nicholas, a tall man with a white beard, dressed in bishop’s robe and tall pointed hat. He comes on December 3, St Nicholas Eve. On that evening, children put their shoes before the fireplace. They stuff hay and carrots into the shoes for St Nicholas’ horse. When Dutch settlers came to the new world, they brought St Nicholas with them. If you try to say words St Nicholas very fast, you can hear “Santa Clauss”.

P7: In Sweden swedish children look forward to St Lucy’s Day which is December 13, and this day leads to Christmas. A girl wearing a crown of pine boughs and seven candles awakens the family and serves them cakes and coffee. On Christmas an imaginary white-bearded dwarf brings gifts in a sleigh.

P3: In Denmark danish children have mysterious visitor named Jule Nesse, a kind old man who supposedly lives in an attic. On Christmas Eve, the children put porridge and milk for him at the door of the attic.

P5: In Spain spanish children look for three callers. On New Year’s Eve, visitors dressed as the three Wise Men may appear. The children put hay in their own shoes for Wise Men’s camels.

P4: In Italy italian children look for an old gnome or a sprite on the twelfth night after Christmas. They have a manager and a star.

P7: In Puerto Rico children enjoy twelve days of Christmas and believe in Santa Claus. Before the children go to sleep, they hang their stockings at the head of the bed for gifts.

P8: In Mexico Christmas begins on December 16 and ends with observance Epiphany, January 6. The celebration of La Posada begins on December 16 and continues for nine nights. On Christmas Eve, the Baby is placed in the manger and everyone sings praises at church. All the houses are decorated with pinatas. When they are broken on Christmas Eve, children find goodies of every kind and small toys and whistles there. Mexican children write letters to the Christ Child, listing their wishes for gifts. They place their shoes at the foot of the bed on January 6th, the night of Epiphany.

P9: In Japan housewives start cooking special food for New Year’s Day. On New Year’s Eve all the members of the family do a big cleaning up. When the house is clean they all sit round and watch television or get ready for New Year’s Day meal. Then on the Japanese television or radio you can hear 108 bells. The 108th bell rings just a second before the midnight. They usually drink rice wine during the meal.

P10: In ancient Rome New Year’s Day was sacred to Janus, the god with the two faces, which looked before and after. In other words one face of the god looked into the future, the other back into the past.

Ведущий: Thank you very much for your interesting reports. We see that the way we celebrate new year depends on the country we live in. It also depends on the century in which people live.
