A mobile phone (also known as a wireless phone, cell phone, or cellular telephone) is an electronic device used for mobile voice or data communication.

The first real mobile telephone call was made on April 3, 1973 in the USA. As soon as his invention was complete, the scientist Dr. Martin Cooper, tested his modern mobile handset by calling a rival scientist to announce his success.

The world's first portable cell phone, the DynaTAC was known as "the brick". It was introduced in the US at Motorola. The phone was a foot long, weighed two pounds, and cost $4,000. It was not until 1983 that the first commercial cell phone system was launched in Chicago by Ameritech Mobile Communications and mobile phones became available to the public.

6. Чтение текста с целью поиска конкретной информации

T: People from different countries have different opinions on using the mobile phones in some situations.

You will read what people say about mobile phones. Fill in the gaps with the appropriate numbers of texts. You can use each number more than once.

1) Read the texts and find a person/persons who:

  • thinks that a mobile phone affects people’s health _____
  • mobile phones are extremely helpful in emergency _____
  • is sure that a mobile phone is dangerous while driving ____
  • hates people using mobile phones in public places ______
  • believes that a person with a mobile phone feels respectable and self-confident ____.

Daniel Parks , U.S.

I think that there is a right time, and a wrong time to use your mobile phone. Anyway, I believe that they are NOT to be used while driving. One site said that talking on a mobile phone while driving had the same results of drunk driving accidents!

Also I think it is very rude to be in a public place and start yakking on your phone! Once I was in the doctor’s office, and as you all know, they are kept very quiet; and this woman's cell phone starts ringing. She decides "I'll let it ring and drive people nuts!" After what seemed a million rings, she starts to yak and talk on her little "toy", annoying everyone. She then leaves and goes, to everyone's disbelief, to the little hallway where everyone can still hear her loud and clear! If you ask me, it's disgusting!!!

Amber, Canada

Yeah, well I think mobile phones rock. I mean yeah, maybe SOME people get into car accidents, but why should I care, I mean I'm only 14. So, I don't really have to care about that just yet. But mobiles are great, and they have saved people's lives, I mean have you heard about all these people who pull over and call 911 because someone got in a car accident and they need help? DUH!!!!! So yeah, that helps a lot and plus like everyone has mobile phones, what's the big deal?

Danielle Franks, U.S.

Mobile phone has been rapidly growing for several years. It has convenience. It changes people’s lifestyle. Even though I think that we shouldn’t use it often. My reasons are as follows. First, according to the research the mobile causes brain disease if people often use it. If people contact it for long time, its electric waves influence people badly. Second, students should use it only after school. A mobile phone sound distracts students during the lesson and can interfere with order in the class. Third, we can see the person talk loudly using a mobile phone in public. I think it is rude. So when you use your mobile phone you should lower your voice. To sum up, although a mobile phone can bring convenience, it can be harmful to us.

Kaye Evangelista from the Phillipines

A mobile phone has saved my life! When my car broke down, I called for help. I don’t use my phone when I'm driving, and if I need to talk, I pull over or use the speakerphone. If you don’t like mobile phones, keep it to yourself. Everyone has a right to their opinions though.

Adil from Algeria

I think a lot of people have cell phone conversations in public on purpose so that they can get a certain status - but anyone who had any identity would not have to do such a silly thing to feel important. To me they are off-putting, very rude. I think mobiles should only be used in emergencies and not distract others.

Annessa from the U.S.

I live in a very high populated city, Austin, Texas that has a booming economy because of a strong high-tech industry. As a result people in my city have become absolutely obsessed with acquiring as many technological toys and items as possible. Mobile phones have become the most favorite ones to get. I think too many people own and use mobile phones. These people are out of control with their phones. I work at a small grocery store as a retail clerk. I've dealt with numerous customers who are simultaneously talking on their cell phones. I mean their behaviour is rude and unnecessary.

Kiana from Hawaii

Mobile phones (especially expensive ones) are just status symbols for insecure people to make them feel important. The only reason people have them is because "everyone" else has one, and they need to compete with those other people. It's the American 'keeping up with the Jones'. Cell phones should not be used while driving or public places such as restaurants. I have been to a fine restaurant with my girlfriend and it is annoying to hear a ring go off. It is further annoying when the "toy user" talks louder (so he can get attention) on his toy.

2) What is your opinion on mobile phones? Have a talk with your partner. Speak for about 1-2 minutes.

7. Отработка грамматики

T: Sometimes, people talking on cell phones forget that they are around other people and pretend they are just chatting at home.
