- Good morning, ladies and gentlemen!

- We are glad to meet you today here. Please, listen to us very attentively because this information will help you at the end of our meeting.

- My friends and me are sure you know and like English very much. Do you like to travel? As for us we like to travel very much. Let’s travel together! Let’s visit an unusual country.

- When I think of Britain, I think of Scotland. With Scotland some people associate people, who are heavy drinkers and smokers. I know it’s not true, I picture them as hard-working in industries such as steel, coal-mining and shipbuilding.

- “The Scots are said to be a serious people, rather inventive and somewhat mystical.”

In Scotland 2% of the population speak Gaelic, another Celtic language, as well as English.

- Scotland – Caledonia, “Land of Cakes” – is a country in the north of Great Britain. Besides the mainland, Scotland includes several islands: the Hebrides, Orkneys and Shetlands.

- You can see symbols of Scotland

- There are many traditional items of clothing the Scots wear for different occasions. Fashions come and go, but there are things that remain even though they are worn by a small number of people.

The Scottish national costume includes a kilt. The kilt is part of the traditional dress of a Scotsman. Scotsmen wear kilts for social occasions. Kilt is a skirt with many pressed folds at the back and sides, and usually of a tartan pattern, worn esp. by Scotsmen.

- A Glengarry is a Scottish woolen cap, usually with ribbons, named after Glen Garry – a valley in the Highlands. A top hat – a man’s or boy’s hat worn on some formal occasions or in the case of boys, as part of the uniform at some schools (Eton or Harrow). Tam-o’-shanter is a Scottish woolen cap with a bobble on top named after the hero of Burns’ poem (“Burns’ Night”).

- Scotland’s national sport is golf (слайд 8).

- I’ll tell you about traditions and customs of Scotland.

- Traditional Scottish dish –haggis made from the heart and other organs of a sheep cut up and boiled inside a skin made from the sheep‘s stomach. Haggis is typically eaten with boiled turnips and potatoes , known in Scotland as “neeps and tatties “. It is considered to be typical Scottish food.

- A Scottish piper –a person playing bagpipes, a musical instrument played especially in Scotland in which air stored in a bag is forced out through pipes to produce the sound : bagpipe music.

- Scottish dancing –the process of performing Scottish dances. Perhaps the best-known of these dances is the so-called Highland fling, which is danced by one man alone (said to be named from the lively actions of the dance , when the arms are flung in the air).

- Robert Burns (1759-1796) is a Scottish poet who wrote hundreds of songs and poems mainly on country life, love, and national pride.

For Scotsmen Robert Burns is an institution as well as poet. He united his countrymen in a sentimental bond. Every year on January 25 (on his birthday) a celebration called Burns Night is held amongst British people living in other countries. The celebration takes the form of a supper (called Burns Supper) at which traditional Scottish dishes are eaten and during which a Scottish piper plays, wearing the national costume. Some of Burns’ most popular poems are recited and there may be Scottish dancing after the meal is finished.

- Now, you know traditional Scottish meals. Let’s continue our journey.

- In spring and in summer many towns of Scotland hold cultural festivals. The best-known one is the Edinburgh International Festival of Music and Drama , held annually from late August till mid-September. It acquaints its numerous visitors with folk-music and folk- songs as well as with “avant-garde“ events .The festival , first held in 1947 .

- Summer is also the season for Highland Gatherings-a traditional annual festival of Scottish sports and music held at a centre in the Highlands. The first games were organized at Braemar by Malcolm, King of Scotland in the 11th century. Now the Braemar Gatherings are very famous especially for their cabertossing competitions. The Braemar Caber is 19 feet long and weighs 120 pounds. The Highland Games have been held since the 19th century. They are held at different towns in the Highlands. They are very popular. - Edinburgh is Scotland’s historic capital. Classical architecture, fine squares and parks, famous castles make Edinburgh the most elegant and romantic city in Britain.

Edinburgh Castle is a famous fortress built on a basalt hill (Castle Rock) in the centre of Edinburgh overlooking Princes Street and the streets of the old town. The oldest parts of the building date back to about 1100.

- Holyrood House is a big royal palace which is the residence of the Queen when she is in Edinburgh.

- The most picturesque part of the Royal Mile is the Cannongate, which gives a good idea of what the Old Town was like. Closes (narrow passages) lead to little yards and attractive historical buildings.

The scenes change as the guide operates the Camera’s system of revolving lenses and mirrors. While the panorama unfolds the guide tells the story of the city’s historic past.

- The Library’s major summer exhibition for 1994 is Pictures of the Mind: Robert Louis Stevenson 1850-1894.

- The statue of Sherlock Holmes in Picardy Place, Edinburgh.

- A line of streets, which runs from the Castle to Holyrood House, is called the Royal Mile.

- One of the most modest and yet one of the best known monuments in Edinburgh is a monument to a dog called Bobby. The dog belonged to John Gray. When he died Bobby lived near his grave for twenty-six years. Later Bobby was buried near his master and his statue in the Old Town has become a symbol of devotion.

- British literature is very rich. You can always find a town, a city or a piece of country connected with a famous writer. Edinburgh was and is the home and classroom of dozens of writers.

- Scott, Sir Walter (1771-1832) - poet and novelist. He was interested in the history and folklore of his native land. In 1802 the first two volumes of his “Minstrelsy of the Scottish Border” were published. They were followed by the third and final one in 1803. Rain.

The rain is raining all around,
It falls on field and tree,
It rains on the umbrellas here,
And on the ships at sea.

I’ LL TRY AND I CAN’ T

1st Boy:

The little boy who says “I’ll try”,
Will climb to the hill-top.

2nd Boy:

The little boy who says “I can’t “,
Will at the bottom stop.

1st Boy: “I’ll try” does great things every day;

2nd Boy: “I can’t” gets nothing done.

1st Boy: Be sure then that you say “I’ll try”!

2nd Boy: And let “I can’t” alone.

Together: And let “I can’t” alone.

Answer: Where there is a will, there is always a way.

When there is no will, there is no way.

- This poet was loved by many women. An attractive appearance, excellent education and fantastic talent made him the brightest representative of the English Poetry.

- As for me, I’m very fond of this person. I still remember some of his poems.

She Walks in Beauty

She walks in Beauty, like the night
Of cloudless climes and starry skies;
And all that 's best of dark and bright
Meet in her aspect and her eyes;
Thus mellowed to that tender lignt
Which Heaven to gaudy day denies.

One shade the more, one ray the less,
Had half impaired the nameless grace
Which waves in every raven tress,
Or softly lightens o'er her face;
Where thoughts serenely sweet express
How pure, how dear their dwelling-place.

And on that cheek, and o'er that brow,
So soft, so calm, yet eloquent,
The smiles that win, the tints that glow,
But tell of days in goodness spent,
A mind at peace with all below,
A heart whose love is innocent!

- Sorry to interrupt you, but do you know...

- The great English revolutionary poet George Gordon Byron was born in London, on January 22, 1788 into an old aristocratic family. His mother came of a rich Scottish family. Byron spent first ten years of his life in Scotland. He was fond of the rocky coast and mountains of the country. His love of natural scenery was reflected in many of his poems.

My Soul is Dark

My soul is dark—Oh! quickly string
The harp I yet can brook to hear;
And let thy gentle fingers fling
Its melting murmurs o'er mine ear.
If in this heart a hope be dear,
That sound shall charm it forth again:
If in these eyes there lurk a tear,
'Twill flow, and cease to burn my brain.

But bid the strain be wild and deep,
Nor let thy notes of joy be first:
I tell thee, minstrel, I must weep,
Or else this heavy heart will burst;
For it hath been by sorrow nursed,
And ached in sleepless silence long;
And now 'tis doomed to know the worst,
And break at once - or yield to song.

Томилась долго и безмолвно;

- Sounds wonderful!

- Yes, he’s very talented.

My Heart’s in the Highlands

My heart's in the Highlands, my heart is not here,
My heart's in the Highlands a-chasing the deer;
A-chasing the wild deer, and following the roe -
My heart's in the Highlands wherever I go.

Farewell to the Highlands, farewell to the North,
The birthplace of valour, the country of Worth;
Wherever I wander, wherever I rove,
The hills of the Highlands forever I love.

Farewell to the mountains high cover'd with snow;
Farewell to the straths and green valleys below;
Farewell to the forests and wild-hanging woods;
Farwell to the torrents and loud-pouring floods.

My heart's in the Highlands, my heart is not here,
My heart's in the Highlands a-chasing the deer;
A-chasing the wild deer, and following the roe -
My heart's in the Highlands, wherever I go.

- Stop! I can’t remember who wrote these words!

- Shame upon you! This poet is known all over the world. His life wasn’t sweet.

A Red, Red Rose

O my luve's like a red, red rose,
That's newly sprung in June:
O my luve's like the melodie,
That's sweetly play'd in tune.

As fair art thou, my bonnie lass,
So deep in luve am I;
And I will luve thee still, my dear,
Till a' the seas gang dry.

Till a' the seas gang dry, my dear,
And the rocks melt wi' the sun;
And I will luve thee still, my dear,
While the sands o' life shall run.

And fare thee weel, my only luve!
And fare thee weel, a while!
And I will come again, my luve,
Though it were ten thousand mile!

From the Poem “The Tree of Liberty”

"Heard ye o' the tree o' France?
I watna what's the name o't;
Around it a' the patriots dance,
Weel Europe kens the fame o't.

It stands where ance the Bastille stood,
A prison built by kings, man,
When Superstition's hellish brood
Kept France in leading - strings, man. <...>

"Wi' plenty o' sic trees, I trow,
The warld would live in peace, man;
The sword would help to mak a plough,
The din o' war would cease man.

Like brethren in a common cause,
We'd on each other smile, man;
And equal rights and equal laws
Would gladden every isle, man.

- And we’ve prepared a beautiful song to you. Join us! Все поют песню “Comin’ thro’ the rye”.
