Интегрированный урок (английский язык + МХК) по теме "One of the "Lotus eaters" (по творчеству Сомерсета Моэма)

Иностранный язык как предмет занимает особое место, так как по мере овладения им становится не целью, а средством получения дополнительных знаний из других областей культуры. Он помогает формировать у учащихся более целостную картину мира, способствует развитию и совершенствованию их интересов и склонностей. Это приобретает особую значимость в старших классах, когда учащиеся уже сознательно подходят к участию в межкультурном общении. В этом смысле очень актуально выглядит метод интегрированных уроков «иностранный язык + МХК (мировая художественная культура)», он предоставляет прекрасную возможность рассмотреть произведения литературы, музыки и живописи в контексте применения иностранного языка. Кроме того, при этом нивелируется некоторое равнодушие современных подростков к литературе и искусству.

Цели урока:

1. Образовательные:

  • ознакомить учащихся с творчеством У.С. Моэма как представителя английской классической литературы;
  • определить, как факты биографии его современников отразились в его произведениях.

2. Практические (развивающие):

  • формировать у учащихся умение осмысливать и интерпретировать произведения этого писателя с учётом приобретенного социального опыта и уровня владения английским языком.

3. Воспитательные:

  • пробуждение интереса к произведениям английской классической литературы, а также живописи.

Оборудование:

  • выставка произведений У.С. Моэма;
  • карточки с ключевыми словами из произведений У.С. Моэма;
  • портрет Поля Гогена и репродукции его картин;
  • запись песни Б. Гребенщикова «Город золотой».

Ход урока

Этап 1. Организационный момент.

Hello, friends! Today׳s lesson is one more in the series of the lessons devoted to the classical English literature. But it is not usual because this time you are going to meet not only one of the famous British writers but also one of the prototypes of his characters. You will get to a wonderful land full of images, spells, amusements and delights. You׳ll meet different characters, while working at some extracts of the Maugham׳s books and even become literature and art researchers. I think the lesson will be interesting and useful for you. So, welcome and enjoy this fascinating and wonderful world!

Этап 2. Введение в тему урока.

На доске помещены высказывания о книгах и писателях:

«Choose an author as you choose a friend»

«Вooks are worlds of wonders»

Look at these sayings and try to explain how you understand them.

How the song is connected with the sayings and the theme of the lesson?

Pupil 1: For me, books are our true friends because we can get some advice, help or sympathy from books in difficult situations.

Pupil 2: When choosing a friend we try to find a person with whom we have much in common. Also, we choose the author who writes things interesting and exciting for us.

Pupil3: Each book is a magic world full of events and facts and you live together with the characters of the book and get delight and pleasure.

Pupil 4: When you open a book you go into another world, wonderful and mysterious. You forget about all your troubles and live a wonderful life, dying and surviving with the characters.

Pupil5: In the song the singer tells us about mysterious and wonderful world where you can escape and hide from all your problems.

Teacher: Right you are. Some people are not satisfied with the real life; they have rich imagination and try to create their own world. Such people seem to others very odd. But for writers they sometimes are interesting. W.S.Maugham liked to observe and then describe such people, their feelings and emotions.

Ученики заранее получили задание подготовить краткую информацию о творчестве У.С. Моэма, а также ознакомиться с его рассказом «Вкусивший нирваны» и ответить на вопросы.

Pupil 6: William Somerset Maugham /18740-1965/- an English writer, achieved a great success as a novelist and a dramatist, but he is best known by his short stories. At the beginning of his literary career Maugham was greatly influenced by French naturalism. Later, his outlook on life changed. It became cool, unemotional and pessimistic. He says that life is too tragic and senseless to be described. A writer can׳t change life, he must only try to amuse his reader, stir his imagination. And this is where the writer achieves perfection: his stories are always fascinating. Maugham׳s skill in depicting scenes and characters with a few touches is amazing.

Teacher: In his stories he spoke about love and hatred, about the depth of human feelings and their disgusting moves.

Pupil 7: I think all the words express human feelings, it shows that Maugham described different people with their troubles and problems.

Pupil 8: Some of the words are pessimistic, but others tell us about author׳s attitude to life: divine, awe, bewilder, affectation, enchant, exultation. He comes from one extreme to another in order to depict human passions.

Этап 3. Разбор произведений У.С. Моэма.

Teacher: It׳s exciting and unbelievable to follow the routes of Maugham׳s plots. But I want you to notice that often the author captures our attention and urge on our imagination from the very beginning. Here are some:

  1. «I could never understand why Louise bothered with me...» (from «Louise»)
  2. «I confess that when first I made acquaintance with Charles Strickland I never for a moment discerned that there was in him anything out of the ordinary...» ( from «The Moon and Sixpence»)
  3. «Most people, the vast majority in fact, lead the lives that circumstances have thrust upon them... looking upon themselves as round pegs in square holes...»( from «Lotus Eater»)

Teacher: Aren׳t they promising and provoking?

Pupil 9: Yes, especially the last two ones, they promise to tell about some not very ordinary people who chose their own style of life.

Teacher: Yes. Maugham himself says: «The characters of fiction are strange fish. They come into your mind. They grow. They acquire suitable characteristics. An environment surrounds them. You think of them now and again. Then you write about them.»

Now let׳s talk about the story «Lotus Eater». Do you know what does the title mean?

Pupil 10: «Lotus» means a mythical fruit that gave the state of pleasure without any problems when eaten. It is mentioned in Greek mythology.

Teacher: What was Wilson׳s job before he came to Italy?

Pupil: He was the manager of the Crawford Street brunch of the York and City in London. He led quite proper style of life.

Teacher: What struck him most when he arrived at Capri?

Pupil: He tells that one of the delights of Capri was leisure; people seemed not to hurry but get pleasure. It was the full moon when he came there and he realized that «it was not the wine that made me drunk but it was the shape of the island ... the moon and the sea and the oleander in the hotel garden. I׳d never seen an oleander before...»

Teacher: What circumstances helped him to make his decision to stay on the island?

Pupil: He understood that nobody waited for him in Britain, besides, he was sick and tired of his monotonous work. He says: «Leisure. If people only knew! It׳s the most priceless thing a man can have and they are such fools…Work? They work for work׳s sake.»

Teacher: What is the position of the author towards his character?

Pupil: Firstly he didn׳t believe that Wilson left his work and home for the sake of his life on Capri. Then he spoke with him ironically and showed nor his encouragement neither his sympathy.

Teacher: Why is the story called «The Lotus Eater»?

Pupil: Wilson was captured by the enchanting beauty of the island and was admired by carelessness and peacefulness of life there. He was really «the lotus eater».

Teacher: The same style of life was chosen by some other characters of Maugham׳s books. But I want you to learn about one of the most famous novel –«The moon and Sixpence». Maugham tells us about the life of one famous artist, who left everything he had in Paris –fortune, family, social position in pursuit of happiness and wishing to express his talent.

Далее ученики получают задание по учебнику (упражнения по работе с иллюстрациями и текстом) по учебнику О.Гроза и др.  «New Millennium» для 11 класса (материалприлагается).

Заключение.

So, dear friends you have learned about the wonderful, splendid world, in which some people found rest and pleasure. But this two famous persons – W.S.Maugham and Paul Gaugen not only touched this world but told us about it. So, that you can make your own decisions about life. The question has not been answered yet...
