Music used in the composition:

Nino Rota. Love theme from the film “The Godfather”

Introduction. Henry Purcell “Rondeau”

Speak softly, Love,
And hold me warm against your heart.
I feel your words –
The tender trembling moments start.
We’re in the world –
Our very own,
Sharing a love that only few have ever known.

Wine-coloured days warmed by the sun,
Deep velvet nights when we are one.

Speak softly, Love,
So no one hears us but the sky.
The vows of love we make
Will live until we die.
My life is yours –
And all because
You came into my world with love –so softly, Love.

Sonya: Love, love, love… Everybody speaks about love. Frankly speaking, I don’t believe in love.

Andrew: I think you’re wrong! Love makes the world go round.

Sonya: Does it? I bet your favourite holiday is St. Valentine’s Day.

Andrew: And what’s wrong with this holiday? I don’t mind receiving Valentine cards, do you?

Sonya: As for me, I see nothing romantic in stupid lines like:

I dream about you day and night,
Be my Valentine and hold me tight!

Andrew: It’s just a rhyme, but there are so many wonderful poems about love. Have you heard about Robert Burns?

Sonya: Of course, I have. He’s the national poet of Scotland. He loved his native country and devoted a lot of poems to the Highlands, “the birthplace of valour, the country of worth”.

Andrew: Yes, he loved Scotland, but he also loved women.

Sonya: Oh, men!

Andrew: Just listen!

A Red, Red Rose

O my Luve* is like a red, red rose
That’s newly sprung in June;
O my Luve is like a melodie*
That’s sweetly play’d* in tune.

As fair art thou*, my bonnie lass,
So deep in luve am I;
And I will luve thee* still, my dear,
Till a’ the seas gang* dry;

Till a’ the seas gang dry, my dear,
And the rocks melt wi’* the sun;
And I will luve thee still, my dear,
While the sands o’* life shall run.

And fare thee weel*, my only Luve!
And fare thee weel a while!
And I will come again, my Luve,
Tho’* it were ten thousand mile.

Luve = Love o’ = of

melodie = melody weel = well

play’d = played tho’ = though

thee = you

gang = go

wi’ = with

Sonya:

Pretty good! But have you heard this?
My love is as a fever, longing still
For that which longer nurseth the disease;
Feeding on that which doth preserve the ill,
The uncertain sickly appetite to please.

So, as you can see, even the great Shakespeare considered love to be a disease.

Andrew: No, Sonya! Shakespeare believed in love!

Thy love is better than high birth to me,
Richer than wealth, prouder than garments’ cost,
Of more delight than hawks or horses be;
And, having thee, of all men’s pride I boast.

Sonya: Oh, yes! Of course! And do you remember what happened to poor Ophelia?

She went mad and drowned herself. And poor Desdemona? She loved and she was killed by her lover. No, thank you! I’d rather do without love.

Andrew: You are wrong! Love is a miracle which helps us overcome all hardships. All right, let’s not argue. I want to show you something.

Act II

Romeo (coming forward)

He jests at scars that never felt a wound, -
But, soft! What light through yonder window breaks?
It is the east, and Juliet is the sun! –
Arise, fair sun, and kill the envious moon,
Who is already sick and pale with grief,
That thou her maid art far more fair than she.
< …>
It is my lady; O, it is my love!
O, that she knew she knew she were! –
She speaks, yet she says nothing: what of that?
Her eye discourses; I will answer it. –
I am too bold; ‘tis not to me she speaks:
Two of the fairest stars in all the heaven,
Having some business, do entreat her eyes
To twinkle in their spheres till they return.
< … >
See, how she leans her cheek upon her hand!
O, that I were a glove upon that hand,
That I might touch her cheek!

Juliet

Ay me!

Romeo

She speaks: -
O, speak again, bright angel!

Juliet

O Romeo, Romeo! wherefore art thou Romeo?
Deny thy father, and refuse thy name;
Or, if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love,
And I’ll no longer be a Capulet.

Romeo

Shall I hear more, or shall I speak at this?

Juliet

‘Tis but thy name that is my enemy; -
Thou art thyself though, not a Montague.
What’s Montague? It is nor hand, nor foot,
Nor arm, nor face, nor any other part
Belonging to a man. O, be some other name!
What’s in a name! that which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet;
So Romeo would, were he not Romeo call’d,
Retain that dear perfection which he owes
Without that title: - Romeo, doff thy name;
And for that name, which is no part of thee,
Take all myself.

Romeo

I take thee at thy word:
Call me but love, and I’ll be new baptized;
Henceforth I never will be Romeo.

Juliet

What man art thou, that, thus bescreen’d in night,
So stumblest on my counsel?

Romeo

By a name

I know not how to tell thee who I am:
My name, dear saint, is hateful to myself,
Because it is an enemy to thee;
Had I it written, I would tear the word.

Juliet

My ears have not yet drunk a hundred words
Of that tongue’s utterance, yet I know the sound:
Art thou not Romeo and a Montague?

Romeo

Neither, fair saint, if either thee dislike.

Juliet

How camest thou hither, tell me, and wherefore?
The orchard- walls are high and hard to climb;
And the place death, considering who thou art,
If any of my kinsmen find thee here.

Romeo

With love’s light wings did I o’er- perch these walls;
For stony limits cannot hold love out:
And what love can do, that dares love attempt;
Therefore thy kinsmen are no let to me.
< … >
Lady, by yonder blessed moon I swear,
That tips with silver all these fruit-tree tops, -

Juliet

O, swear not by the moon, th’inconstant moon,
That monthly changes in her circled orb,
Lest that thy love likewise variable.

Romeo

What shall I swear by?

Juliet

Do not swear at all;
O, if thou wilt, swear by thy gracious self,
Which is the god of my idolatry,
And I’ll believe thee.

Andrew: Isn’t it a wonder?!

Sonya: Yes. You know, I want to tell you something. Love is a wonderful thing!

(Love) is an ever-fixed mark,
That looks on tempests, and is never shaken;
It is the star to every wandering bark,
Whose worth’s unknown, although his height be taken.

Andrew:

Love’s not Time’s fool, though rosy lips and cheeks
Within his bending sickle’s compass come;
Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks,
But bears it out even to the edge of doom.

Long Live Love!

The end
