Text “William Shakespeare”
Who was that William Shakespeare of Stratford? More has been written about him than about any writer that ever lived. And although we know more about him than most of his contemporaries, there are certain things that historians can not say with a firm: “This is the final, the absolute truth”. While reading any biographical book about Shakespeare, we may be surprised at a large number of such sentences as “We have no trace of what Shakespeare did during these years”.
The facts are very few. Shakespeare was probably born on the 23d of April, 1564, in Stratford-on-Avon. His father was a respectable shopkeeper. His mother, Mary Arden, was a farmer’s daughter. William was the eldest of eight children. We know that when Shakespeare was 18, he married Anne Hathaway, a woman 8 years older than himself; Susanna, their first child, was born in 1583, and the twins Hamnet and Judith were born in 1585. At the age of 22 Shakespeare left Stratford for London. He worked in different spheres: from sailor and soldier to lawyer’s clerk and horseholder. In 1593 and 1594 he wrote 2 early poems: “Venus and Adonis” and “Lucrece”. He was already reaching the height of his fame when The Globe Theatre was built in 1593. He died on the 23d of April in 1616 in Stratford. That is all we know about William Shakespeare.
There has been a good deal of debate about his education. It is true that he never went to University. Some romantics have made him out to be an unlettered man of the people. They declared that an illiterate could never have written such poetry and that someone else must have done it instead. Such reactions are unnecessary. Shakespeare learned grammar, logic and Latin at the grammar school and he had enough education to develop his literary skill.
Shakespeare’s acquaintance with the art of the actor helped him in an understanding of the art of the playwright. Besides, he had an observing mind, a profound understanding of life and an acquaintance with all classes of men and women, and an ability to see human nature.
Shakespeare’s genius did not lie in his ability to create plays, but in his capacity for revealing life in its full richness and movement.

Послетекстовой этап. Речевые способы контроля.

  9. When did he become famous?
