Dearguests, todaywearegoingtocelebrateStAndrew'sDay. You probably know that he is the patron saint of Scotland as well as many other countries. Let's try to learn more about this person and about this country. Please listen very attentively because this is going to be really interesting.(слайд 10)

30 November, the church festival of St Andrew regarded as Scotland's national day, is now an official bank holiday. On this day some Scotsmen wear a thistle in their buttonhole. The original Andrew was a fisherman in the Holy Land, one of the 12 disciples of Jesus helping to spread the Christian faith. He was martyred on an X-shaped cross. (слайд 11)

Everyone in Scotland knows the legend of how the thistle, the national emblem, saved the country in the Middle Ages, when the Scots and Vikings were at war. At night the Vikings wanted to attack the sleeping Scots and kill them. They took off their boots and crept barefooted towards the unsuspecting Scottish army. Suddenly, one of the Vikings stepped on a thistle and gave a loud cry of pain. His cries raised the alarm and the Scots woke up and defeated the Vikings. In gratitude, the plant was adopted as the symbol of Scotland. (слайд 12)

Another well-known symbol is a bagpipe. The Scots play music on the bagpipes. The piper blows air into a bag. He holds this bag under his arm and presses the air into the other pipes. In this way the music never stops. The bagpipes make a very loud sound and you can hear the pipes a long way away. The sound they make is unusual, but their music is suitable both for dancing and for serious occasions. (слайд 13-18)

You certainly know that St Andrew's flag is the national flag of Scotland. The legend says that in 832 AD, an army of Scots was facing the enemy. The Scottish king prayed to St Andrew for help, and saw the saltire of St Andrew in a clear blue sky. That's why he swore that if the Scots win the battle, St Andrew would forever be the patron saint of Scotland. The Scots won the battle and from that day on the saltire has been the national flag of Scotland. (слайд 19-20)

Modern kilts have up to eight meters of material which is thickly pleated at the back and sides, with the pleats stitched together only at the waistband. Fashion designers have also tried to update the kilt and make it appeal to a wider audience by using non-tartan designs such as camouflage and material such as leather.(слайд 21-24)

Have you ever heard of the Edinburgh International Festival? It presents a rich program of classical music, theater, opera and dance in six major theaters and concert halls, over a three week period in late summer each year. The festival was established in 1947, its founders believed that it should enliven and enrich the cultural life of Europe, Britain and Scotland. It's a world class cultural event, which brings together audiences and artists from around the world, would also generate significant cultural, social and economic benefits for Edinburgh and Scotland - as relevant today as it was over 60 years ago.(слайд 25-28)

Speaking of Scotland we cannot but mention some famous Scottish names.

Walter Scott was awriter and poet, a born storyteller and master of dialogue, one of the greatest historical novelists, whose favorite subject was his native Scotland. Scott wrote twenty-seven historical novels. His influence is seen among others in the works of James Fenimore Cooper, Alexandre Dumas, and Aleksandr Pushkin. Sir Walter Scott was born in Edinburgh in 1771, he attended the Royal High School and the University of Edinburgh. Scott took on a wide variety of themes in his writing; works on Scottish history, such as Rob Roy and A legend of Montrose, stories of the medieval period, such as Ivanhoe, and Talisman, and biography, such as his Life of Napoleon. (слайд 29)

Robert Burns was a Scottish poet and a lyricist. He is widely regarded as the national poet of Scotland, and is celebrated worldwide. He is the best known of the poets who have written in the Scots language, although much of his writing is also in English and a "light" Scots dialect, accessible to an audience beyond Scotland. As well as making original compositions, Burns also collected folk songs from across Scotland, often revising or adapting them. His poem (and song) Auld Lang Syne is often sung at Hogmanay. Other poems and songs of Burns that remain well-known across the world today include A Red, Red Rose, To a Louse, To a Mouse, The Battle of Sherramuir, Tam o' Shanter, andAe Fond Kiss. (слайд 30)

Joanne Rowling, the author of the Harry Potterfantasy series, lives in Edinburgh. Rowling has led a "rags to riches" life, in which she progressed from living on welfare to multi-millionaire status within five years. She is one of the most influential women in Britain.(слайд 31-32)

Scotland has always been a very mysterious country. It's a place where a lot of different weird creatures live. The Loch Ness monster is a creature that may or may not exist, that people call "Nessie". The creature is said to inhabit Loch Ness in the Scottish Highlands. Most eye witnesses and believers think that this creature is one of few remaining dinosaurs. It has managed to survive and hide from the world. The Loch Ness monster is definitely an interesting and mysterious beast. To many, the Loch Ness Monster is the first paranormal phenomenon they ever come into contact with and certainly not the last. (слайд 33-37)

There are a lot of castles in Scotland. They are associated with ghosts and strange noises. Most of them are used as hotels nowadays. Cawdor Castle is the most magnificent castle in Scotland. This castle is not quite old. The castle became part of the Campbell "empire" when Muriel Calder, heiress to the castle, was kidnapped at the age of 12 and married to the Earl of Argyll's son, Sir John Campbell in 1511. A ghost wearing a blue velvet dress has been reported in the castle though no one can say whether this is Muriel Calder.

Glamis Castle has many legends and secrets surrounding it. The most well-known legend is of the secret room or chamber that is hidden deep within the castle walls. It is said that the Lord of Glamis and "Tiger" Earl of Crawford played cards with the Devil himself. It is also said that the chamber contains the bones of Scottish clansmen who sought refuge from enemies. (слайд 38-41)

We could tell you much more stories about Scotland as it's a great wonderful country but we have to wrap up. Now it's time to check your knowledge. Let's see what you remember about Scotland and St Andrew.(слайд 42)
