King John was probably the worst king ever to mount the English throne. He was cruel, mean and cunning. Everyone hated him and when he died nobody regretted him. He was so evil that the nobles, the Church and the common people of England forced him to sign the document known as Magna Carta, the Great Charter of English liberties. It limited the king’s power and protected people’s rights. It was signed in Runnymede in 1215.
John was the favourite son of King Henry the 2nd and the younger brother of Richard the Lion Heart. Although Henry gave John everything he asked for, he rebelled against Henry and joined the French against his own country. The rebellion was not successful, but his father’s heart was broken.

Magna Carta, the Great Charter

Runnymede is a place by the Thames near Windsor. It means a great deal to every citizen in Great Britain. King John was on one bank and the nobles were on the other. They wanted him to sign Magna Carta. He received it with pleasure. But one look at the armed men made him realize that for the moment he had no choice. He still hoped to gain time. But finally the document was signed.
Now there are 4 copies of Magna Carta: in the British museum and in the cathedrals of Lincoln and Salisbery. They are one of the most important documents in the history of Great Britain.
Magna Carta consists of 63 articles. They protected the rights of the Church and the nobles against the King. There is one article that says: “No freeman shall be taken or imprisoned except by the lawful judgement of his peers or by the law of the land.
It is difficult for us to realize what that meant in England many centuries ago. In those days no man’s life was safe. He could be imprisoned at the pleasure of the King and there was nothing he could do about it.

– Why was it so important in those days?
