Saying good-bye

1. Good afternoon! You may take your seats! I am very glad to see you today!

2. Introduction. Today we continue to talk about the Subjunctive Mood. We have already been practicing using these grammar structures for a long time.

Today we are going to practice using these structures in various situations. And we will listen to the song and talk about the most common superstitions.

Let's begin our lesson with the revision of the main types of the conditional sentences. The following tongue-twisters will help us. (Учащиеся практикуются в чтении, произношении скороговорок, определяя типы условных предложений):

  1. I'll eat when I'm hungry,
  2. I'll drink when I'm dry;
  3. If trees don't fall on me
  4. I'll live till I die.
  5. If wishes were horses,
  6. Beggars would ride,
  7. If turnips were watches,
  8. I'd wear one by my side.
  9. Three wise men of Gotham
  10. Went to sea on a bowl;
  11. If the bowl had been stronger,
  12. My story would have been longer.

На основе скороговорок учащиеся вспоминают типы условных предложений в английском языке:

1. If + Present Simple, will + V (in the main clause)

2. If + Past Simple, would + V (in the main clause)

3. If + Past Perfect, would + have + V3(in the main clause)

Now it is time to listen to a very popular song by Eric Clapton. Do you know this musician?

Before listening: we'll get acquainted with the words of the song and understand the general idea of it.

While listening we are going to fill in the gaps in the song. (Students study the task and complete listening under the exam conditions).

After listening: we check the answers and discuss the types of conditional sentences used in this song and try to think "What would you do, if you could change the world?"

Now it's grammar time! Let's have a look at the situations and use the proper type of conditional sentences in them.

Exercise 1. Conditional sentences
Answer the questions with "yes" or "no"

If the weather had been good yesterday, our picnic would not have been canceled.

Was the picnic canceled? YES

Was the weather good? NO

If I had an envelope and a stamp, I would mail this letter right now.

a. Do I have an envelope and a stamp right now? _______

b. Do I want to mail this letter right now? _________

c. Am I going to mail this letter right now? _________

Ann would have made it to class on time this morning if the bus hadn't been late.

Did Ann try to make it to class on time?______

Did Ann make it to class on time? ___

Was the bus late? ____

If the hotel had been built to withstand an earthquake, it would not have been ruined.

Was the hotel built to withstand an earthquake? ___

Was the hotel ruined? _____

If I were a carpenter, I would build my own house.

Do I want to build my own house? _____

Am I going to build my own house? ___

Am I a carpenter? ___

If time permits, there is an interesting extra task for discussion: using first and second conditional will you continue the situation:

1. If you meet a woman with an empty pail:

2. If a black cat crosses your path:

3. If a mirror breaks:

3. If you have spilt some salt:

4. Is somebody praised you too much:

5. If you drop a spoon or a knife:

6. If you forgot something at home and had to return:

7. If you found some money in the street:

8. If a cup breaks:

9. If you want to pass the exams successfully:

Today we have discussed the three types of conditional sentences in different situations? We've listened to the song and practiced the tongue-twisters. We tried to use these grammar structures speaking about the most common superstitions. If you have questions you may ask me. (Students are usually eager to know how superstitious their teacher is.)

Hope you have enjoyed it. Will you write the home assignment for the next lesson. (The teacher gives the home assignment and finishes the lesson).

Thank you for your work and attention see you tomorrow, children!
